Andy Miele (born April 15, 1988 in Grosse Pointe Woods , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since July 2020 and is in the position of the center plays.
Career
Andy Miele began his career in Detroit's youth leagues at the age of seven and, despite his small height, also played basketball in his youth . Between 2005 and 2008 he played for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League . Although he only played 74 games for Chicago, Miele set a team record for the most goals in a career with 43 goals.
In autumn 2007 Miele began studying at Miami University in the state of Ohio , but initially continued to play in the USHL. Only in the course of the 2007/08 season did he move to the university's ice hockey team, the RedHawks , and thus only played 18 games in his debut season. In the following years, the center finished the season among the three players with the highest points in its team and was at the top of the NCAA scorer standings in 2010/11 with 71 points from 39 games . He led his team to their first title win in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and was named the most valuable player in the decision tournament. He eventually received the 2011 Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best college ice hockey player in the country.
After Andy Miele was not selected in the NHL Entry Draft by any team of the National Hockey League , he joined the Phoenix Coyotes in April 2011 as a free agent . There he received an entry-level contract for two years. He spent most of his rookie season with the Coyotes' farm team, the Portland Pirates , in the American Hockey League . There he finished the season as the best scorer of his team and was voted rookie of the month November. He also received an invitation to the AHL All-Star Classic . In addition, the center made its NHL debut for the Coyotes at the start of the season and came on seven missions. In the following two seasons, Miele was also the top scorer of the Pirates and was part of an AHL All-Star Team for the first time in 2014 .
In July 2014, the center decided to move to the Detroit Red Wings from his home state Michigan as a free agent . However, he was initially only used for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL, where he also established himself as the best scorer in his first season and reached the penultimate round of the play-offs with the team . After two years without NHL involvement, his contract was not renewed, so he joined the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent in July 2016 . The Flyers also used the attacker exclusively in the AHL, so Miele decided to move to Europe in May 2017 and signed a contract with the Malmö Redhawks from the Svenska Hockeyligan . In February 2018 he moved within the league to the Växjö Lakers , before playing for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the Continental Hockey League for the entire 2018/19 season.
After two years in Europe, Miele returned to the NHL by signing a two-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes in July 2019 . After spending the entire 2019/20 season there with the Tucson Roadrunners farm team in the AHL, he returned to Torpedo in the KHL after just one year in July 2020.
International
Andy Miele first appeared at the 2011 World Cup for the USA , where he was one of three college players on the team alongside Chris Kreider and Craig Smith . He was used in two games over the course of the tournament and recorded two assists. For the 2014 World Cup , he was reappointed to the US national team and played four games.
