Blake Daniel Geoffrion (born February 3, 1988 in Plantation , Florida ) is a former American ice hockey player and current official who played 67 games for the Nashville Predators and Montréal Canadiens in National Hockey between 2004 and 2013 League on the position of the center . Since July 2016 he has been Assistant General Manager of the Cleveland Monsters from the American Hockey League .
Geoffrion comes from a traditional ice hockey family - his maternal great-grandfather Howie Morenz and his paternal grandfather Bernie Geoffrion are members of the Hockey Hall of Fame and his father Dan Geoffrion also played in the NHL.
Career
Blake Geoffrion was born in the city of Plantation , Florida , and grew up in Brentwood , Tennessee . Geoffrion's first experience in organized ice hockey was with the team at the Culver Military Academy in Indiana , with whom he won the regional championship in 2003. He then received an invitation to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program of the US ice hockey association USA Hockey . In the NHL Entry Draft 2006 Geoffrion was selected in the second round at a total of 56th position by the Nashville Predators , shortly thereafter Blake Geoffrion went to the University of Wisconsin – Madison and played for the university's ice hockey team, the Wisconsin Badgers . For the Badgers, the attacking player completed a total of four seasons, in his last he became the first Wisconsin player to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award , which is given annually to the best college player.
On April 16, 2010, the striker signed a trial contract with the Milwaukee Admirals from the American Hockey League (AHL) , the Predators' farm team , for which he played three play-off games and scored two goals. In June of the same year Geoffrion signed an entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators from the National Hockey League (NHL) . However, the player spent most of the 2010/11 season with the Admirals in the AHL. Blake Geoffrion played his first NHL game against the Dallas Stars on February 26, 2011 ; thus, for the first time in the history of the National Hockey League, a fourth generation player was on the ice. He scored his first NHL goal on March 1, 2011 against the Edmonton Oilers .
Geoffrion could not establish himself permanently in the NHL roster of the Nashville Predators in the 2011/12 season and completed some games for both the Predators and the Milwaukee Admirals, as in the previous season. On February 17, 2012, the Predators transferred Geoffrion, Robert Slaney and a second-round vote for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to the Montréal Canadiens . Nashville received defense attorney Hal Gill in return . His grandfather Bernie Geoffrion and his great-grandfather Howie Morenz also played for the Canadiens and are members of the Hockey Hall of Fame . In addition, the shirt numbers of both players were blocked by the Montréal Canadiens. His father Dan Geoffrion was also active for the Canadiens in the 1979/80 season .
In the summer of 2013, Geoffrion, who suffered a fractured skull in November 2012, decided to end his active career. He was then hired as a scout by the Columbus Blue Jackets , for which he worked in this role until summer 2016. In July 2016, he was hired by the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League as assistant general manager.
International
Geoffrion first represented the United States at the 2006 U18 World Youth Championship , where he and his team won the gold medal after beating the Finnish national team in the final . At the U20 Junior World Championship in 2007 Geoffrion lost the semi-final game against the Canadians with the USA , in the game for third place they defeated the Swedish selection and thus secured the bronze medal. A year later he placed fourth with the USA after they lost again to Canada in the semi-finals and had to admit defeat to Russia in the game for third place .
