Matthew "Matt" Gilroy (born July 30, 1984 in North Bellmore , New York ) is a former American ice hockey player on the position of defender , who in the course of his playing career for the New York Rangers , Tampa Bay Lightning , Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers have played in the National Hockey League .

Career

Gilroy first played from 2000 to 2003 in the US state of New York for the high school team of St. Mary's Gaels , in the high school league system of the United States. Gilroy then went two seasons in the Eastern Junior Hockey League , a junior junior league in the United States, one season each for the New York Apple Core and Walpole Stars on the ice. From 2005, the defender was on the ice for the Boston University ice hockey team , for which he played four years in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In 2009 he won the NCAA American College Championship as the captain of Boston University and was honored with the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best player of the season. After the season was over, he signed a two-year deal with the New York Rangers . On July 2, 2011 Gilroy received a free agent contract for one year with the Tampa Bay Lightning . On February 27, 2012 they transferred him to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Brian Lee . The following season he received a contract with the New York Rangers, but played during the NHL lockout in the 2012/13 season, first with the Connecticut Whale in the American Hockey League , before joining the team's NHL roster in January 2013 was called. In July 2013, Gilroy signed a new two-way contract for one year with the Florida Panthers .

Before the 2014/15 season, Gilroy moved to Atlant Moskovskaya Oblast in the Continental Hockey League . Due to financial problems, Atlant withdrew from the game operation after the 2014/15 season and Gilroy moved with a few other players to HK Spartak Moscow , who took over Atlants KHL starting place. For Spartak he completed a total of 106 KHL games in the following two game years, in which he collected a total of 53 scorer points. In July 2017 he moved to Jokerit within the KHL . He ended his career in Switzerland with the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers .

Gilroy wore jersey number 97 in honor of his brother Timmy, who died at the age of twelve.

International

For the USA , Gilroy took part in the 2010 World Cup in Germany. Eight years later, he was part of Team USA's squad at the 2018 Winter Olympics , where the team that competed without an NHL player finished seventh.
