Martin "Marty" Sertich (born October 13, 1982 in Roseville , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Hamburg Freezers in the German Ice Hockey League .

Career

Marty Sertich played for the local selection team during his time at Roseville High School. In 2001 he was named Minnesota Mr. Hockey Best High School Player in the State of Minnesota . After graduating from his school, Sertich moved to the Sioux Falls Stampede in the United States Hockey League in the 2001/02 season . There he was one of the most successful scorers and scored 53 points in 64 games. In 2002 he began studying at Colorado College and played for the team there, the Colorado College Tigers . In his sophomore year he was his team's top scorer, scoring 39 points in 39 games. In the 2004/05 season Sertich was the best scorer of the entire National Collegiate Athletic Association with 64 points in 42 games and was able to qualify with his team for the championship tournament. There you reached the final series called Frozen Four and lost in the semifinals to the eventual winner University of Denver . For his outstanding achievements, Sertich subsequently received numerous awards, including the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for the best college ice hockey player. A year later, Sertich was captain of his team and was again for the Hobey Baker Award nominated .

In July 2006, the American signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League . This sent him for the 2006/07 season to the farm team Iowa Stars in the American Hockey League . Also in his second year he played in the AHL and was his team's top scorer. In June 2008, Sertich was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche and then signed a new multi-year contract. He spent the 2008/09 season again in the AHL, this time with the Lake Erie Monsters . Due to two concussions, he was only able to play 24 games. The next year, Sertich played 53 games before suffering a third concussion in February 2010 and out for the remainder of the season.

For the 2010/11 season , he moved to Europe in Switzerland and signed for EHC Olten from the National League B . There he was one of the best players in the league and extended his contract by two years. When Germany Cup 2011 Sertich first played for the US national team . In February 2012, he also denied two games for HC Lugano of the National League A . In the 2012/13 season , Sertich and his team reached the NLB playoff finals, where they lost to Lausanne HC . On July 21, 2013, the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League announced the commitment of Sertich. In the summer of 2014 he moved to league rivals Hamburg Freezers . The American ended his active career in 2016.

Style of play

Sertich has excellent technical skills and has his strengths as a center especially in building up the game and passing. He is effective in power play and can read the game well. Sertich is a fast skater, good face-off player and often appears as a goal scorer. Although he is smaller in stature, he works hard on the gang and has a good defensive game. He has a good work ethic and leadership skills.
