Holzinger, who in 1996 in the service of the Rochester Americans of the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League , won in 1995 as the best college players in the United States with the Hobey Baker Award excellent.

Career

Holzinger was initially active for the Padua Franciscan High School in the high school league system of the United States, where he recommended himself relatively quickly with convincing performance for a possible professional career. For the team, Holzinger scored 73 goals and 65 assists in 35 encounters before he went on the ice from 1989 to 1991 for the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors in the North American Hockey League . In the 1991 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the sixth round at a total of 124th position by the Buffalo Sabers . Then the attacker began studying at Bowling Green State University and was active for their ice hockey team, the Bowling Green Falcons , in the National Collegiate Athletic Association until 1995 . During this time, the American won numerous individual awards, including the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Actor of the Year in the 1995 calendar year . The greatest honor was bestowed upon Holzinger that same year when he received the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best male college ice hockey player.

In the course of the 1994/95 season , the offensive player made his debut for the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League and completed four meetings for the team in the regular season and the playoffs, with Holzinger recording a total of six points. In the following season the right-shooter was active both for the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League and for their farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League . In 1996 he won the Calder Cup with the Rochester Americans, the American with 24 points in 19 matches - within the team, the second best points collector after playoff MVP Dixon Ward - had contributed significantly to this success. The season 1996/97 spent Holzinger completely in the NHL squad of the Sabers and completed the statistically most successful season of his career with 51 points scorer in 81 games of the regular season. During his engagement in Buffalo, the striker was unable to win the Stanley Cup , but in the 1998/99 season he reached the final series for the prestigious trophy with the Sabers. However, the Dallas Stars prevailed with 4-2 wins and won the trophy for the first time.

Holzinger remained active in Buffalo until shortly before the trade deadline in March 2000, before he entered into a barter deal with Cory Sarich , Wayne Primeau and a third-round right to vote in the NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Chris Gratton and a second-round right to vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2001 was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning . He ran on the ice for three years in the Bolts jersey , with the American ice age often limited over time due to injury problems. After being out for almost the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury the attacker sustained in a game against the Florida Panthers in October 2001, a broken leg in September 2002 put him out of action for several months again. After his comeback , the right-handed shooter was on the ice for the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League for a while . In March 2003 the Tampa Bay Lightning gave it to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Marc Bergevin .

Although he was regularly used in the Penguins' jersey, he had the worst value of his career in the 2003/04 season with a plus / minus balance of -27 in 61 matches for the Pittsburgh Penguins. During this season, the pens exchanged him , again shortly before the trade deadline, for the Finnish striker Lasse Pirjetä and transferred the American to his home state Ohio to the Columbus Blue Jackets . For this, Holzinger completed a total of 13 NHL games with one goal by the end of the 2003/04 season. After the 2004/05 season was canceled due to a lockout , the attacker did not return to the National Hockey League as a professional player.

International

Holzinger represented his home country at the international level at the Junior World Championship in 1992 . In seven games, the striker contributed one goal and one assist to the bronze medal win of the US selection . The right-handed shooter also spent two minutes in the penalty box.
