The Asheweig River is a left tributary of the Winisk River in the north of the Canadian province of Ontario .

The Asheweig River rises west of Kingfisher Lake . It initially flows north towards Big Trout Lake , absorbing some of the water from Kingfisher Lake. But then it turns to the northeast and later to the east. It flows through several lakes including Long Dog Lake , Kasabonika Lake , Shibogama Lake, and Straight Lake . Then the river changes direction to the north. It overcomes the Howling Falls , later takes the Frog River from the left, turns to the northeast and then again to the north and finally meets the Winisk River, which is also flowing north.

The Asheweig River has a length of approximately 400 km. Its upper and middle reaches are in the area of the Canadian Shield . At the gauge near Straight Lake, the river has an average discharge of 76 m³ / s with a catchment area of 7950 km² .

The only settlement on the river is that of the Kasabonika First Nation .
