The Winisk River is a river in northern Ontario , Canada .
It has its origin in Wunnummin Lake and flows to Winisk Lake . From there it flows further north to Hudson Bay . The Winisk River is 475 km long and has a catchment area of 67,300 km². The name of the river is derived from the Cree word for " woodchuck ".
The river is remote and not accessible by road. There are only a few settlements on the river: Wunnumin Lake First Nation (on Wunnummin Lake), Webequie (on Winisk Lake) and Peawanuck (about 30 km from the mouth). The river is characterized by strong currents. There are whitewater trails at the transition from the Canadian Shield to the Hudson Bay Lowlands . Then the Winisk River widens.
Tributaries
Winisk River Waterway Provincial Park
Much of its stretch of river between Winisk Lake and Polar Bear Provincial Park has been elevated to Provincial Waterway Park . This is a park with no infrastructure. So far there are no fees and no visitor facilities.
