The Shamattawa River is a right tributary of the Winisk River in the north of the Canadian province of Ontario .

The Shamattawa River rises 70 km northeast of Winisk Lake . It runs west of the Ekwan River and east of the lower Winisk River . It flows mainly in a northerly direction. On its way it flows through Shamattawa Lake . It finally flows into the Winisk River at Peawanuck , 40 km from its confluence with Hudson Bay . The river has a length of about 240 km. At the level below Shamattawa Lake, the mean discharge is 39 m³ / s.
