The main road 9 is a main road in Switzerland .

This road leads from the border with France near Vallorbe in the canton of Vaud through the Rhone Valley and over the Simplon Pass to Gondo and the border with Italy.

In the lowlands, the main road, with the exception of the 31-kilometer section between Sierre and Visp in Valais, is only of minor importance for motorized individual traffic in long-distance traffic, as transit traffic is predominantly taken over by the A9 motorway . The opening of the missing section was planned for 2016, but was postponed to 2025 after several delays. The Eyholztunnel was opened in 2018.

history

In the Middle Ages, the Rhone Valley and the Simplon Pass were relatively insignificant traffic routes that were negligently maintained by the communities. In 1801, Emperor Napoleon I ordered the construction of a year-round pass road, which was completed in 1806. Originally, this route was supposed to run a total of 15 kilometers through tunnels and galleries, but this plan was abandoned for cost reasons. Due to the strategic importance of this road, the Valais was incorporated into the French Empire in 1810 as the Département du Simplon . In 1811 the road from Paris via Lausanne and Brig to Milan and Rome was one of the main arteries of the French road network and was referred to as Route impériale No. 6 .

The canton of Valais, which was rebuilt in 1815, passed a road law in 1817 that declared Simplon road to be a canton road. In 1835, the route through the Rhone Valley was again open to carts.

course

The road begins in Vallorbe as a continuation of the national road 57 (ex- N 67 ) coming from Pontarlier . It leads to Lausanne , the capital of Vaud on Lake Geneva . From there, the road leads along the north bank of the lake through Montreux , past Chillon Castle to Villeneuve and follows the Rhone via Martigny , where the main road 21 branches off to the Great St. Bernhard Pass , through the Valais to Brig and thus largely parallel to the Simplon line . From there, the main road 19 leads on to the Furkapass , while the main road 9 as the national road N9 third class to the Simplon pass at an altitude of 2006  m above sea level. M. leads. Part of the Simplonpassstrasse is the Ganterbrücke , one of the highest bridges in Switzerland. Beyond the pass, the road ends behind the border village of Gondo . On the Italian side, Strada Statale 33 continues to Domodossola .

The total length of the road is around 233 kilometers. Except for short four-lane sections between Martigny and Sitten , between Aigle and Montreux, and between Lausanne and Vevey, it is not directional.
