Ardon is a political municipality and a civil parish in the Conthey district in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .

Ardon is a wine-growing place in which the white wine - grape variety Fendant is grown.

geography

Ardon lies on the north bank of the Rhone and on the west bank of the Lizerne as well as on its alluvial cone , about halfway between Sion (Sion) and Martigny . The neighboring communities of Ardon are in the north Conthey , in the east Vétroz , in the south Nendaz and in the west Chamoson . The canalized lower reaches of the Lizerne from the Lizerne & Morge SA hydropower plant closes the municipality to the neighboring municipality of Vétroz almost in a straight line.

Main road 9 and motorway 9 pass through the territory of Ardon . There is a railway stop on the Simplon line in town . A side street branches off at the western edge of the built-up area from main road 9 in the direction of Chamoson and runs through the vineyards between the two towns.

In the village there is a small hydroelectric power station next to a rock cut through the Lizerne . The course of the river comes from an inaccessible gorge that begins in the Derborence basin .

economy

The hydroelectric power station on the Lizerne has existed since the early 1960s. The operating company, which was founded when it was established in 1957, is based in Sion. The municipality of Sion acquired shares in the operating company Lizerne et Morge SA in 2017 and now owns 50% of the share capital. The storage power plant has an installed capacity of 50 MW. Its average annual production is around 160 GWh. It uses water from the catchment areas of the Lizerne and Morge .
