Conthey (Ger. Gundis ) is a political municipality , a civic community and the capital of the district of the same name in the canton of Wallis (French: Valais) in Switzerland .
geography
The municipality extends from the Tsanfleuron glacier on the border with the canton of Vaud down to the banks of the Rhone , at over 3000 m above sea level. M. to 460 u m. M. It consists of the ten localities Aven, Châteauneuf, Conthey, Daillon, Erde, Le Bourg, Premploz, Sensine, St-Séverin and Vens, the largest - Plan-Conthey and Châteauneuf - being in the Rhône plain, smaller ones like Sensine , Erde , Premploz or Daillon at different altitudes up to 930 m above sea level. M.

history
In the Middle Ages Conthey belonged to the Duchy of Savoy , while the neighboring communities of Sion (French: Sion) and Savièse were owned by the Bishop of Sion. This led to numerous conflicts.
Today Conthey is best known as a regional shopping center and - after Satigny GE , Chamoson VS and Sitten - as the fourth largest wine-growing community in Switzerland. Conthey, like other areas in the Valais Rhône Valley, enjoys a mild climate with below-average rainfall.
