The 2001/2002 Bundesliga was the twelfth season of the women's Bundesliga . The 1. FFC Frankfurt became German champions for the third time .
The course of the season
The most serious pursuer of 1. FFC Frankfurt was 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam , who won the first six games, while Frankfurt was behind with a 0-0 draw at FFC Brauweiler Pulheim. At the end of the first half of the season, Potsdam unexpectedly lost two home games in a row against SC 07 Bad Neuenahr and SC Freiburg . When the Potsdam women clearly lost 4-1 in front of 800 spectators in Frankfurt at the beginning of December, the championship was practically decided. By the end of the season 1. FFC Frankfurt did not lose another game and were 14 points ahead of 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and FCR 2001 Duisburg German champions. The Bayern Munich reached a good fourth place. The FSV Frankfurt improved to fifth place. The sixth place of the promoted SC Freiburg is also remarkable. The teams in the other places were able to move away from the relegation zone early on. Newcomers Hamburger SV and 1. FC Saarbrücken , which landed in 12th place in the previous season, had to relegate. The Hamburg women lost the first 14 games and then picked up eight points in the last eight games and at least gave up the red lantern.
The 1. FFC Frankfurt qualified for the UEFA Women's Cup . Hamburger SV was relegated to Regionalliga Nord, 1. FC Saarbrücken to Regionalliga Südwest. The two places were taken in the 2002/03 season by Tennis Borussia Berlin and TuS Niederkirchen , who prevailed in the promotion round.
