Inka Grings (born October 31, 1978 in Düsseldorf ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach. The striker played for 16 years in the women's Bundesliga for FCR 2001 Duisburg . With the German national team , she won two European championship titles and was also the top scorer in both tournaments. In April 2019, as the coach of the regional league club SV Straelen, she became the first woman to take over a men's team in the top four football leagues in Germany.
Career
Inka Grings actually wanted to become a tennis player . Since she was not accepted by the local tennis club, she began playing soccer at TSV Eller 04 in 1984 . Via Garather SV , she moved to FC Rumeln-Kaldenhausen in 1995, later FCR 2001 Duisburg . There she immediately became a regular player and in the following years one of the most successful goal scorers in the Bundesliga. On May 5, 1996 she made her debut in the German national team against Finland . In 1998 she scored three goals in the DFB Cup final in a 6-2 win over FSV Frankfurt . A year later she was the top scorer in the Bundesliga for the first time .
The year 2000 was the most successful year of her career. First she won the indoor cup with the FCR , then she became German champion . Then she took part in the 2000 Summer Olympics, with which she won 3rd place with the German team and thus a bronze medal. Her 38 goals this season are unmatched to this day. After the turn of the millennium, she was repeatedly thrown back from several injuries. In 2001 she missed the European Championship in her own country. In 2003 she suffered a strained thigh while taking a preparatory course for the World Cup . Shortly before the 2004 Olympics , she suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament . After this injury, she wanted to quit, but changed her mind during rehabilitation .
For winning the bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games, she and the team received the Silver Laurel Leaf.
When she was FCR to 2006 captain before her by coach this office Dietmar Herhaus was withdrawn. After the 1: 6 home defeat against 1. FFC Frankfurt , Herhaus sharply criticized Grings' attitude on and off the pitch. Inka Grings then announced that they wanted to change the club if nothing changes in the coaching position. Despite attempts at arbitration, this led to the final suspension of the player on October 25, 2006. On December 5, 2006, the suspension was lifted again, three weeks after coach Dietmar Herhaus resigned from his position. In February 2007 she extended her contract in Duisburg until June 30, 2009. In 2009 she won the UEFA Women's Cup and the DFB Cup with Duisburg and the European Championship with the national team , where she was the top scorer with six goals.
Despite many injuries, she is the most successful goalscorer in German club football; on January 29, 2011 she scored her 350th goal in the away game against 1. FFC Frankfurt. She leads the all-time top scorer list in Duisburg by more than 200 goals.
In 2011, Grings moved to FC Zurich together with Sonja Fuss . Her former club, FCR Duisburg, will never again give her jersey number 9 in her honor. On March 16, 2013, she and Fuss announced that they would be leaving FC Zurich Women on May 20, 2013 and signed a contract with the Chicago Red Stars that was valid from that date . For the 2013/14 season she returned to Germany and received a one-year contract with the second division club 1. FC Köln (since August 27, 2013).
After 96 appearances, Inka Grings announced her resignation from the national team at the end of July 2012. Before the European Championship qualifier on September 19, 2012 in Duisburg against Turkey, it was officially adopted. After 1. FC Köln announced that it did not want to extend their expiring contract, Grings ended her playing career on May 30, 2014.
Coaching career
In the summer of 2014, Grings became the coach of the women's Bundesliga team at MSV Duisburg , to which the teams from their old club FCR 2001 Duisburg had switched due to insolvency proceedings. She signed a two-year contract there. In the 2014/15 season she was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with MSV Duisburg , but managed to get promoted again in the 2015/16 season . In March 2016 she successfully completed the football teacher training course and in April 2016 her contract was extended by two years to June 30, 2018. In the 2016/17 season she managed to stay up with MSV Duisburg, but dissolved her contract at the end of the season.
For the 2017/18 season , Grings took over the male B youth team from FC Viktoria Köln, who played in the B-Junior Bundesliga . She wants to establish herself in the men's field and excludes a return to a women's team. At the end of the season, the team was relegated penultimate and Grings left the club again.
On April 1, 2019, Grings took over the regional league club SV Straelen, which was in 13th place in the table, as head coach. She became the first coach of a club from the top four German leagues. At the end of the season she finished 16th in the table with SV Straelen and was relegated to the Oberliga Niederrhein . After her successful promotion to the regional league at the end of the 2019/2020 season, Grings declared her engagement with SV Straelen ended on June 10, 2020.
