Célia Šašić (* 27. June 1988 in Bonn as Célia Okoyino da Mbabi ) is a former German football player with Cameroonian - French descent. Between 2004 and 2013 she played for SC 07 Bad Neuenahr for almost ten years , then from 2013 to the end of her career in 2015 for 1. FFC Frankfurt , where she won the 2015 UEFA Women's Champions League and the 2014 DFB Cup experienced her greatest successes at club level. Since 2005 she was also in the national teamactive, with which she was twice European champion .

Šašić was twice top scorer in the Bundesliga and top scorer in both the Champions League and the World Cup in 2015. In 2012 and 2015 she was voted Germany's Player of the Year , and in 2015, after finishing her career, she was also named Europe's Player of the Year .

In 2013 she married the Croatian footballer Marko Šašić and took his family name.

She began her career at the age of five at TuS Germania Hersel . Her older brother Nicolas took her to training at the time. Via the stations SC Widdig , TuS Pützchen 05 and FC Sankt Augustin , she came to SC 07 Bad Neuenahr in 2004 , where she became a regular player straight away. National team

The football talent of Šašić caught the talent of the DFB . At the beginning of 2004, the player, who had been a citizen of France until then, was naturalized in the Federal Republic of Germany upon her application. In the U-17 national team , she scored 15 goals in 13 appearances. On July 2, 2004, she scored five goals in a 7-0 win over Iceland . Her greatest success as a junior national player was winning the 2004 U-19 World Cup in Thailand . A year later she reached the semi-finals with her team at the U-19 European Championship .

On January 28, 2005, Šašić was in Quanzhou, China, as the second youngest player to date in a DFB national team , making her debut in the senior national team: in the game against Australia she was substituted on for Navina Omilade . She scored her first goal on September 4, 2006 in a friendly against Canada . To date she is the fourth youngest scorer in the national team. With the national team she won the Algarve Cup in spring 2006 , where she was substituted on in all games and was able to convert a penalty in the final against the USA on penalties.

On March 18, 2007, she suffered a broken shin during the Bundesliga match between SC 07 Bad Neuenahr and Bayern Munich . At that time, she was the top scorer in the Bundesliga. Because of the break, she was unable to take part in the 2007 Women's World Cup.

In August 2008 she won the bronze medal with the national team at the Olympic Games and the following year the 2009 European Women's Football Championship in Finland .

At the 2011 World Cup in Germany, she was part of the team's squad and scored the decisive 2-0 in the opening game in a 2-1 win over Canada in front of almost 74,000 spectators in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

In March 2012 she was the most successful goalscorer of the tournament with six goals at the Algarve Cup . In the final group match against the FIFA world number five Sweden , she scored three goals (final score 4-0). With another three goals in the final in Faro against world champions Japan (4: 3), she played a key role in her team's title win. With these three goals, she is the first German player to score three goals in a game against a team in the top 3 of the FIFA world rankings. In the European Championship qualifier against Spain on March 31, she finished four times successfully, making her the first German player to score at least three goals in three consecutive games . She was able to expand this record with four more goals in the European Championship qualifier against Switzerland on April 5.

In August 2012 she was voted Germany's Player of the Year by a clear margin . She received the award on September 19, 2012 before the European Championship qualifier against Turkey.

At the European Championship held in Sweden from July 10 to 28, 2013 , she played all tournament games. She scored her two tournament goals on July 14th in the second group game in a 3-0 win against Iceland, with the goal for the interim 2-0 in the 55th minute and the goal for the final score in the 84th minute. With the final won 1-0 against the selection of Norway , she became European champion with the team.

On May 24, 2015 she was appointed to the squad for the 2015 World Cup in Canada by national coach Silvia Neid . You scored three goals in the 1-0 win against Ivory Coast in the first group game. She scored two more goals in the round of 16 against Sweden (4-1). In the quarter-finals against France, she equalized 1-1 with a penalty in the 84th minute. After Šašić had previously terminated her contract with 1. FFC Frankfurt, she ended her career in professional football shortly after the World Cup on July 16, 2015 at the age of only 27 to finish her studies, then to reorient herself professionally and to start a family establish. In the same month, a jury made up of sports journalists voted her Germany's footballer of the year for the second time. In August, also by sports journalists, it was named Europe's Footballer of the Year.

Before the friendly against England on November 27, 2015, she and Nadine Angerer, who also resigned after the World Cup, were officially retired from the national team and both were honored for more than 100 international matches.

On November 30, she was nominated as one of three players for the FIFA Ballon d'Or 2015, the award for the world's best female footballer. She took second place in the election.

Šašić at the 2011 World Cup

Šašić is the daughter of a Cameroonian and a Frenchwoman. She has an older brother, Nicolas, and a younger sister, Laurence. At the age of 15 she was naturalized together with her parents to enable Germany to participate in the U19 World Cup. The part "da Mbabi" of her maiden name means something like "(daughter) of Mbabi", the name of her father is Elias Mbabi da Yombi. The name part Okoyino comes from her paternal grandmother. Because of the long family name, Célia Okoyino da Mbabi was the only player in the Bundesliga who only wore her first name on the club jersey due to lack of space. On the other hand, her full surname was shown on the national team's jersey.

In spring 2007, Šašić passed her A-levels at the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium in Bonn. Her majors were sports and French . On August 1, 2007, she began training as a marketing communications clerk. She studied cultural studies at the University of Koblenz-Landau .

In the Tatort broadcast shortly before the 2011 Women's World Cup : Offside , she had a cameo .

Since August 1, 2013, she has been married to the Croatian amateur footballer Marko Šašić, the son of football coach Milan Šašić . In June 2016 she gave birth to daughter Mila.

Since October 2010, Šašić has been working as a DFB integration ambassador together with the national players Cacau and Serdar Taşçı as well as the referee Sinem Turac . As a GoVolunteer ambassador for diversity and tolerance, Šašić is committed to working together in Germany. She also supports the Theo Zwanziger Foundation, which is committed to promoting sport, in particular the promotion of girls' and women’s football.
