Milan Šašić (born October 18, 1958 in Karlovac ) is a former Yugoslav football player and Croatian coach .

Career

During his playing days, Šašić was a goalkeeper at NK Karlovac . In 1991 he came to Germany on vacation. At the same time the civil war broke out in Croatia and his family later left home. It was not until 1995 that he was persuaded to train the B-class team of the DJK Gebhardshain-Steinebach for a few months. He then moved to VfL Hamm / Sieg , where he was responsible for the reserves for several years. Later he took over the Hammer Oberliga-Elf. After that he had to find work in order to get the residence permit in Germany. Since he did not do this as a soccer coach, he worked for a road construction company in Heuzert (Westerwald).

From July 2002, Šašić was a coach at TuS Koblenz and led the club, which was facing financial and sporting problems at the time, to the regional league within two years and to the 2nd Bundesliga within two more years . There he was dismissed after a series of five defeats from six games four game days before the end of the 2006/07 season , without his team had been on a relegation zone by then.

Before returning to professional football in February 2008, Šašić completed the DFB football instructor course at the German Sport University in Cologne in order to be able to look after teams in the first and second Bundesliga. As part of this course, he sat in at VfL Bochum , Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt .

Before the 20th matchday of the 2007/08 season , Šašić took over the coaching position at 1. FC Kaiserslautern . The team prevented relegation to the third division on the last day of the match. In the 2008/09 season, FCK played under his direction for promotion to the Bundesliga, but could not maintain its strong form from the first half of the season in the back series. In May 2009, Šašić was released, but Kaiserslautern did not rise even under his successor Alois Schwartz .

On November 2, 2009 Šašić was coach of the second division MSV Duisburg . He succeeded Peter Neururer , who had been on leave three days earlier. In the 2010/11 season he led MSV Duisburg into the DFB Cup final , which was lost 5-0 to FC Schalke 04 . On October 27, 2011, MSV Duisburg split from Šašić after the club had been eliminated from the DFB Cup the day before with a 2-0 defeat at the regional division Holstein Kiel .

On September 13, 2013, Šašić was introduced as the new coach of 1. FC Saarbrücken . After almost five months in the position of head coach of Saarbrücken, he announced his resignation on February 10, 2014 after a sustained series of defeats and the resulting last place in the third division .

After his resignation, Šašić worked as the head of the sports promotion department of the Saarbrücken main sponsor, the Victor's Residenz-Hotels . He announced that he would never work as a coach anymore. Instead, he took over the post of sports director at FCS and became a member of the club's management. Šašić was released from these tasks at the end of April 2016 after persistent failure.

Private

Šašić is the father-in-law of the former German national player Célia Šašić .
