Nadine Keßler (born April 4, 1988 in Landstuhl ) is a former German soccer player . Between 2004 and 2009, the midfielder played at 1. FC Saarbrücken mainly in the 2. Bundesliga and twice achieved promotion to the Bundesliga with the club . There she was awarded the Fritz Walter Medal in silver as the best young player of her year in 2006. After the second promotion, she moved to the 1st FFC Turbine Potsdam in 2009 . She has played for VfL Wolfsburg since 2011 .

With Potsdam and Wolfsburg she was German champion four times and won the Champions League three times . In 2014 Keßler was chosen as a key player in Wolfsburg's successes in the championship and Champions League, Europe's footballer and FIFA world footballer of the year . Since 2010 she has also been part of the German national team , with which she became European Champion in 2013 . In April 2016 she ended her career due to an injury.

Life

Born in Landstuhl in 1988, Keßler grew up in nearby Weselberg , where she also attended kindergarten and elementary school. After graduating from high school in 2007 at Sickingen-Gymnasium in Landstuhl, she began her basic training in the German armed forces in October 2007 . She was stationed in a sports promotion group at the Bundeswehr sports school in Warendorf and held the rank of corporal . At the same time, she began studying to become a fitness economist , which she successfully completed in 2012. Since then she has been working for a communication design agency .

In 2009 Keßler was a member of the 13th Federal Assembly for the Saarland SPD .

Club player

Nadine Keßler began her career at SV Herschberg . Via SV Hermersberg and SC Weselberg , she moved to Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Saarbrücken in 2004 . In 2006 she was top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga South , and missed promotion with her team on the last matchday. A year later she was again top scorer and rose to the Bundesliga with Saarbrücken . In 2008 she reached the DFB Cup final with her club team, but lost 1: 5 to 1. FFC Frankfurt . Nadine Keßler suffered a chipped cartilage behind her kneecap in the 42nd minute of a game against VfL Wolfsburg on May 12, 2008 . In 2009 she rose again to the Bundesliga with Saarbrücken, but moved to 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam together with Josephine Henning . With Turbine she became German champion in 2010 and won the DFB Indoor Cup and the Women's Champions League .

VfL Wolfsburg

For the 2011/12 season Keßler moved to VfL Wolfsburg, with whom she reached the second league place at the end of the season. Thus VfL was able to qualify for the Champions League for the first time . As a result, the injury-prone Keßler experienced the most successful two years of her career: With her club, she won the triple : In the championship and in the DFB-Pokal, the wolves prevailed against Potsdam and in the Champions League they surprisingly defeated the title holder of the last two Years Olympique Lyon . In the 2013/14 season, she and her team again won the championship and the Champions League and was named Europe's Footballer of the Year by UEFA at the beginning of the following season . In January 2015, she was named world player of the year . In 2014/15 Keßler won the DFB Cup and runner-up with VfL Wolfsburg, but only made a brief appearance in the Bundesliga for the entire season due to injury.

With the U-19 national team, Keßler won the European Championship in 2006 . At the U-20 World Cup in 2006 , she reached the quarter-finals with her team. In July 2007, she defended the European title with the U-19 selection. With the U-20 selection, she was able to reach third place at the World Cup in Chile . 22 February 2010 Kessler was first in the squad of the senior team for the Algarve Cup appointed. During the tournament, she made her debut against Finland and scored her first goal directly at 7-0. At the 2013 European Championships in Sweden, she became European Champion.

Keßler was also part of the squad that won the 2014 Algarve Cup title. In the final against Japan she was substituted on in the second half and achieved the 1-0 lead with her first ball contact. On March 12, 2015, Nadine Keßler had to undergo another knee operation, which meant that she was unable to attend the 2015 World Cup in Canada . It was the ninth intervention since she was 18.

On April 14, 2016, she ended her active career due to persistent knee problems.

Since summer 2016, Kessler has been a UEFA ambassador for the development of women's football together with Camille Abily , Verónica Boquete , Laura Georges , Stephanie Houghton and Lotta Schelin . In addition, she has been an advisor for monitoring the development of women's football at UEFA in Nyon since March 2017 .
