Mariel Margaret "Mia" Hamm-Garciaparra (born March 17, 1972 in Selma , Alabama ) is a former American soccer player .

Hamm is one of the most popular sportswomen in the USA. With her as the protagonist, football (in the American name "soccer") developed into one of the most popular sports among American girls. She has completed 276 international matches and scored 158 goals. In the number of international goals, it was only surpassed on June 20, 2013 by Abby Wambach , who initially increased the record to 160 goals and ended her career with 184 goals. When it comes to the number of internationals, only Kristine Lilly , who played 354 games, and Christie Rampone , who made 311 games, surpassed her.

Career

Adolescent years

Hamm was born with clubfoot , which made it necessary to correct it. For most of her childhood she lived with her parents and five siblings in military quarters at home and abroad. During a stay in Italy , Hamm's father became enthusiastic about football and also infected his daughter. From then on, Hamm played regularly. In Texas, the striker was active for Notre Dame Catholic High School in Wichita Falls , then in Virginia for Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke. There she helped the team to win the state championship for school teams in 1988. After finishing school, Hamm went to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , with whose women's team she won the American University Women's Championship in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1993 . In 1991 Hamm was suspended because of the World Cup in China . The attacker was honored several times with personal awards during these years. In 1993 she graduated from the University of North Carolina. Since there was no women's professional league in the USA until 2001, Hamm only played for the national team in the following years.

Washington Freedom, 2001-2003

Only in the years 2001-2003 she had the opportunity to play in the short-lived professional league Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA). She played for Washington Freedom , with whom she won the league championship in September 2003. The WUSA stopped playing after this season.

National team

Hamm was appointed to the American women's national team at the age of 15, and on August 3, 1987, at the age of 15 years and 140 days, she made her debut against China . This made her the youngest debut player on the US team. On July 25, 1990, the striker scored her first goal in the US dress. In 1991 she was appointed to the squad for the World Cup in China by national coach Anson Dorrance . This made her the youngest participant in the team. Hamm scored two goals during the tournament, helping her team win the title. In the final, the USA prevailed 2-1 against Norway , with Hamm starting their team. At that time, the attacker was still in the shadow of Michelle Akers , April Heinrichs and Carin Jennings-Gabarra .

At the 1995 World Cup , she had to keep the goal in the group game against Denmark in the last five minutes of the game after Briana Scurry was sent off. She was able to fend off two shots on goal. This makes her the only field player to date to have guarded the goal in a World Cup game.

On September 18, 1998, in a 4-0 win against Russia, she became the first US player and third player ever to score her 100th international goal. The last of their 158 international goals they scored on November 3, 2004 against Denmark.

In February 1999, on the occasion of the group draw for the 1999 World Cup, she played with the national team against a FIFA World Cup. The game is not counted as an official international match.

In 1999 she became soccer world champion again. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , she became Olympic champion. She was able to repeat this success at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . At the 2004 graduation ceremony, she carried the flag of the US team. Mia Hamm ended her international career after the 2004 Olympic Games and a so-called Fan Celebration Tour , a series of ten friendly games in the USA. In the last game she wore a shirt with her married name Garciaparra in the second half - she is married to the former baseball star Nomar Garciaparra .

Hamm also won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . She also reached third place with the US national team at the 1995 and 2003 World Championships.

Her 276th and last international match was against Mexico on December 8, 2004. Julie Foudy (274th international), Brandi Chastain (192nd) and Cindy Parlow (158th) ended their international career at the same time . It was also the last international match under national coach April Heinrichs . The number was only set to 276 games in August 2016 after the US federation had come across two international matches held in January 1995 when reviewing its statistics, which had not been taken into account until then and in which it had an appearance. In some statistics that have not yet been updated, it is therefore still listed with 275 international matches.

It was 2001 by the FIFA for the first FIFA World Player of the Year twice elected and also received the award of 2002.

On June 20, 2013 Abby Wambach scored four goals in a 5-0 win against South Korea in the first half and initially set Mia Hamm's world record of 158 goals; she later increased it to 184 goals.
