FIFA World Player of the Year 2006
The FIFA World Player of the Year 2006 (then still FIFA World Player ) was chosen on December 18, 2006 in the Zurich Opera House . It was the 16th award of the “ World Footballer of the Year ” award introduced by the FIFA World Cup in 1991 . The winner of the award was the Italian Fabio Cannavaro .
Voting mode
The winner was determined by a vote among 165 national coaches and 165 national team captains. They each named the three best footballers in their opinion, although none of the three were allowed to come from their own country. An entry in first place brought five points, a second place three points, the third place one point. Then the points were added.

- Club : Club for which the player was active in the calendar year. If a player has changed clubs, the club who is leaving is named in first position.
