Adriano Leite Ribeiro (born February 17, 1982 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ), Adriano for short , is a former Brazilian soccer player .

Club career

The beginning of his career

As a little boy he played soccer in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. When he started going to school, a friend gave him soccer shoes as a gift and he began to write his great "Football Story". At the age of seven he was accepted into the youth of the Flamengo Rio de Janeiro football club , where he mainly played indoor football and "5 on 5". At the age of ten he joined the Flamengo youth team, where he played as a center and left defender. At the age of 15 he switched to the position of attacker. In 2000 he made his first-team debut for Flamengo. He scored the first goal after five minutes; in the rest of the game he prepared another three hits. In the following season he got a regular place in the first team. He scored ten goals this season.

Inter Milan

Adriano was signed together with Vampeta and Reinaldo on August 11, 2001 for the equivalent of five million euros from the Italian club Inter Milan . He made his debut the day after signing Real Madrid . After a few minutes he scored his first goal for the new employer.

AC Florence and AC Parma

In early 2002, after five months at Inter, Adriano was loaned by Fiorentina , where he scored five goals in thirteen games. Since the club was in great financial difficulties, the Brazilian was loaned out to AC Parma after just six months . At the same time, AC Parma offered Inter's management team to pay 12.5 million euros for joint ownership of Adriano's transfer rights. Inter accepted this offer and Adriano moved to Parma in July 2002.

During his first season in the Parma jersey, he formed a congenial duo with Romanian Adrian Mutu and scored 16 goals; he also gained a lot of experience in the UEFA Cup . At the end of the season, Inter fans wanted club owner Massimo Moratti to bring Adriano back, but Adriano also played the first half of the 2003/04 season at AC Parma, scoring eight goals in the first nine games. Massimo Moratti bought Adriano back at the beginning of the second half of the season. Since the transfer value of Adriano was estimated at 58 million euros at AC Parma at the time, Inter Milan had to pay half, almost 29 million euros in transfer fees, due to only half of the transfer ownership. Adriano signed a contract with Inter Milan on January 21, 2004, eight days earlier he had played a game with AC Parma.

Adrianos return to Inter Milan

In the first game after returning to Inter, he scored two goals in a 4-0 win over AC Siena . He maintained his good form, scoring nine goals in the second half of the season in Serie A and three goals in Coppa Italia . He made it possible for Inter to appear in the Champions League after only finishing fourth in Serie A. His excellent games put some great players like Christian Vieri and Álvaro Recoba in the shade. After all that, the fans gave him the nickname L'Imperatore (Eng. Ruler). It was named after the Roman emperor Hadrian (Italian: Adriano). In the same year he scored 28 competitive goals. At that time he was considered one of the best strikers in the world, which was not only proven by his election as world scorer in 2005.

Lows

In 2006 his father Almir Leite Ribeiro died. After he had lost his regular places at Inter and in the Seleção , he fell into deep depression and turned to alcohol. He then gained weight and was eventually marginalized. His then coach Roberto Mancini did not pay enough attention to him, so Adriano was loaned to São Paulo during the winter break of the 2007/08 season. He should find his way back to himself on home soil.

Half a year in São Paulo and second return to Inter

Adriano started playing for São Paulo FC in January 2008 . Its fans were downright enthusiastic about the "big number 10". In the first game against the club from Guaratinguetá , he scored the two goals for São Paulo to win 2-1. Adriano scored 17 goals in 28 games. In the summer of 2008 he returned to Inter Milan.

Before returning to Italy, Inter coach Mancini had been replaced by Portuguese José Mourinho . Adriano was happy to see Mourinho come because he had wanted to bring him to Chelsea earlier .

"Escape" to Brazil

After Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Peru (3-0) on April 1, 2009, Adriano surprisingly did not return to Milan and was lost for a few days without any connection with the Milanese club management. After wild speculations about Adriano's whereabouts were sparked, the striker explained through his agent that he was staying in Rio de Janeiro and would take a temporary break from football as he had lost the fun of the game. The contract with Inter Milan, dated until June 2010, was then terminated on April 22, 2009. According to his own statement, Adriano “didn't want to go back to Italy”. After his father's death in 2006, Adriano was in the public eye mainly because of his excessive lifestyle.

Abruptly returned to Brazil and a few weeks without football, he signed with his youth club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro in May 2009 . There he found his old joy in playing, had - despite being clearly overweight - an increasing form and stood out due to his constant performance. In the 2009 season he scored a total of 19 goals in 30 championship games in the Série A and won the Brazilian championship with the club, each two points ahead of SC Internacional and São Paulo FC . He was also the top scorer of the Série A. with 19 goals scored this season together with Diego Tardelli from Atlético Mineiro .

However, he continued to have private problems, such as alcohol and drug problems as well as connections to the Brazilian mafia.

Comeback at AS Roma

During the summer break of 2010, AS Roma signed the attacker, who signed a contract until the end of June 2013. There he was supposed to replace Luca Toni , who had switched to CFC Genoa . Adriano had previously managed to reduce his excess weight (up to 20 kilograms). However, he was still far from his ideal form and only made short appearances with the Roma. Since Adriano was also noticed by negative behavior off the pitch - he came back late from vacation and did not allow the club doctor to treat him after an injury - AS Roma terminated the contract with Adriano on March 8, 2011.

Another return to Brazil: Corinthians São Paulo

In March 2011 Adriano returned to his homeland to Corinthians São Paulo . He signed a contract until January 31, 2012 and was given the number 10 on his shirt. He was presented at the club's press conference by former Corinthians' Ronaldo player . In March 2012, the contract that ran until June was terminated by mutual agreement.

Unsuccessful restart at Flamengo and Paranaense

On August 22, 2012 it was announced that Adriano, after recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, would play again for his hometown club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . Both sides agreed on a contract by the end of the year. Adriano did not appear in the 2012 season as he was struggling with the consequences of the injury. In addition, he often attracted negative attention due to lack of discipline. As a result, his contract was terminated prematurely on November 6, 2012.

In February 2014 Adriano signed with the southern Brazilian club Athletico Paranaense from the city of Curitiba . A few weeks later, in April 2014, he was released for two missed training sessions. Adriano announced in the media that he wanted to find a club in Italy again.

Failed restart in France

In December 2014, Le Havre AC announced the signing of Adriano from French Ligue 2 . This was withdrawn a month later after the planned takeover of the club by the French businessman Christophe Maillol had failed.

National team

Adriano made his debut on November 15, 2000 against Colombia , he was then initially no longer considered for the Seleçao . In 2001 he was the South American champion with the Brazilian U-20 national team. On March 29, 2003, he played his second game in the senior national team against Portugal two and a half years after his debut. In his third international match against Nigeria on June 11, 2003 , Adriano scored his first goal in the Seleção .

At the Copa America 2004 in Peru , which Brazil won, he was named top scorer with seven goals and the best player of the tournament. In 2005 he won the Confederations Cup with the national team . He was named the top scorer and best player of the tournament with five goals.

Dunga , who had replaced Carlos Alberto Parreira as Brazilian national coach after the 2006 World Cup , initially no longer considered him for the national team, but put him back on February 6, 2007 in the game against Portugal . For the games against Venezuela and Colombia on October 12 and 15, 2008 , he was called back to the national team for a long time thanks to his consistently good performance. Adriano was not nominated for the 2010 World Cup.
