Knowing that his father (Colonel Francisco Briglia) would not agree, he secretly left home. His family only found out from the newspapers and magazines that he was playing in Rio.

In Rio the players were trained at America. Here he was noticed by Vasco's coach, Flávio Costa. This asked him to come to Vasco, but he had already signed the contract with America. But there was a problem: Léo's father should have signed the contract. This is said to have torn the contract. Nevertheless, he first had to run for America after a judge, who was also an official for America, signed the contract.

In 1953 Briglia went to the CSD Colo-Colo in Chile . With the "Tigers" he became Chilean champion in 1953 . In the same year and the following he was the top scorer here . After Colo-Colo, Léo moved to EC Bahia .

Léo tried to play at EC Vitória but the red and black refused, arguing that he was old, decadent, and at the end of his career. The president of Bahia EC reacted in a similar way, arguing "Léo drinks a lot and is irresponsible." But the former player and coach Geninho insisted on the risky commitment. The player paid it back and led Bahia to the title of first Brazilian champion in the 1959 Taça Brasil .

"Almost" world champion

1958 Léo Briglia was appointed to the Brazilian national team by coach Vicente Feola . But unloaded again eighteen hours before leaving for Sweden. His former Fluminense coach had told a major newspaper that the athlete's knee was injured and that his teeth were very bad. He was replaced by Dida from Flamengo Rio de Janeiro .

Briglia later said that there was a positive aspect to this incident. Because it gave Pelé the opportunity to play in his position and show the world who the greatest star in Brazilian football is. “If I had gone to Sweden, Pelé would not have been able to shine because he would not have had the opportunity to play. But it should be Pele and it was, ”said Léo Briglia.
