The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 2016 was the 60th season of the Brazilian Série A .
Attendees
Season course
The 2016 season of the Série A started on May 14th and ended on December 11th of the same year. At the same time as the championship was held, the Summer Olympics were also held. The game was not interrupted for this. Only two games were postponed because the stadiums were needed to host the soccer games . These were the games between Fluminense Rio de Janeiro and Figueirense FC on matchday 18 and the match between Botafogo FR and Coritiba FC on matchday 19 . The games were made up for on September 3rd and 4th during an international break for the 2018 World Cup qualification .
On June 12, the seventh match day saw the derby between Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . The game was marked by the derby rivalry, four dismissals and ten yellow cards.
On June 15, Tite , who had previously coached Corinthians São Paulo , stepped down to become the new coach of the Brazilian national soccer team . Various coach changes took place during the season, sometimes several per club.
On November 27th, Palmeiras São Paulo secured his ninth league title on the penultimate match day, the first in twenty-two years, with a 1-0 win over the Chapecoense . Only about twenty-four hours later on November 28 at around 10:15 p.m. local time ( UTC − 5 ), the Chapecoense team crashed on their way to Colombia for the final first leg against Atlético Nacional in the Copa Sudamericana near Rionegro / Medellín airport . Only three of the twenty-two team members flown with them survived the crash.
Due to the accident, the national association decided to postpone all games in the competitions still to be played by seven days. This affected the last match day of the Serie A season and the final second leg in the Copa do Brasil . On the last day of the match, Chapecoense would have had to play a game against Atlético Mineiro . On December 1, 2016, the president of Mineiro announced that his club would not play that game. For Mineiro, the rejection meant a score in favor of 3-0 for Chapecoense. There was no significant impact on table placement for either team. The pairing was viewed by the association as a double canceled game and not counted.
- Qualification for international competitions
For 2017, the game modes in the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana were changed. For the Brazilian League, this meant that the top six clubs from the league as well as the cup winners qualified for the Copa Libertadores , which meant an expansion of two more starting places in the qualifying round of the competition.
The previously cumbersome qualification for the Copa Sudamericana was also omitted. The participants for this come from Series A, but were already eliminated from the national Copa do Brasil at the start of the Copa . Now six starting places from Série A (places seven to twelve) were automatically qualified. Brazil lost two participants here.
table
If there is a tie in the table, the following criteria result in the placement:
- Number of victories
- Goal difference
- Number of goals scored
- Direct comparison
