history
The Estádio Urbano Caldeira in Santos , a port city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo , was built in 1916. The new stadium opened on October 12th of that year. FC Santos was founded four years earlier and has been using the stadium as a venue for its home games since it was built. To date, Santos has been the Brazilian soccer champion three times and won the country's cup once . The club also won the Copa Libertadores , the continental competition of South America , and the World Cup twice , in 1962 and 1963. At that time, perhaps the best football player of all time, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, called Pelé, played at Santos . The three-time soccer world champion played almost his entire career in Santos. In a championship game against Botafogo in this stadium in 1964 , Pelé alone scored eight goals in an 11-0 win. On October 2, 1974, he played his last game as an active footballer also in this stadium in the 2-0 against AA Ponte Preta .
The capacity of the Estádio Urbano Caldeiras today is 21,256 spectators. A record crowd was achieved when Corinthians from São Paulo made a guest appearance in Santos on September 20, 1964 . The 0-0 between these two teams was seen by almost 33,000 spectators. In the same year, a total of 181 people died in the Estádio Urbano Caldeira when a mass panic broke out. As a result, some safety precautions were taken and hardly any overcrowding was allowed. In 1997 a renovation was carried out in the stadium, including the installation of modern electronics and a new lawn. Since then, the stadium has been one of the best equipped in Brazil . In 2003, FC Santos opened a museum inside the stadium, in which visitors can get an overview of the club's history.
