The Estádio Orlando Scarpelli is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Florianópolis . It has space for 19,908 spectators and is the home of the Figueirense FC club .

history

The Estádio Orlando Scarpelli in Florianópolis , the capital and with a little more than four hundred thousand inhabitants also the largest city of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina in the south of the country, was built in 1947 and completed in December of the same year. In the following years it was used as a training ground for the Figueirense FC footballers , who at that time were still playing in the Estádio Alfredo Konder. After the old stadium was closed in 1958, the Estádio Orlando Scarpelli became the venue for the Figueirense team. On June 12, 1960, the club's 39th birthday, the stadium was officially opened. It wasn't until almost a year later that the first game took place here, on May 27, 1961, Figueirense lost 4-0 to Atlético Catarinense. The first goal in the stadium was scored by Ba, a player from Catarinense. When Figueirense became the first team from the state of Santa Catarina to be promoted to Série A , the top Brazilian division, in 1973 , the Estádio Orlando Scarpelli was renovated, which included improvements to the lawn, the installation of changing rooms and the installation of lighting. The first game in the newly renovated stadium took place on August 15, 1973 when Figueirense received the EC Bahia from northern Brazil.

Only a few months later, the record score that is still valid today was achieved during a league game when 26,660 onlookers watched the 0-0 draw of Figueirense against CR Vasco da Gama from Rio de Janeiro on December 2, 1973 . The record attendance for non-league games dates from August 12, 2000. After the Estádio Orlando Scarpelli was briefly modernized, the Brazilian national soccer team and that of Chile met in Florianópolis for a friendly game that ended 3-0 in favor of the Brazilians. This international match is still the only one of those at the Estádio Orlando Scarpelli, the spectators can mostly only watch Figueirense FC matches. The club, which in addition to winning fifteen times the national championship in Santa Catarina in 2007 , advanced to the final of the Copa do Brasil , the Brazilian soccer cup, is currently playing in Série A after being promoted from the second-rate Série B in 2010 .

The Estádio Orlando Scarpelli now offers space for 19,908 spectators. Since 2005 it has been a purely seated stadium, which is quite unusual in Brazil . With a capacity of 19,908, it is the largest stadium in Florianópolis, ahead of Avaí FC's Estádio da Ressacada , which has a capacity of 15,000.
