Edmundo (born April 2, 1971 in Niterói ; full name Edmundo Alves de Souza Neto ) is a former Brazilian football player .
Edmundo's nickname is "O Animal" ( Portuguese for "the animal"). This was given to him because of many evictions for assault . His position was mostly that of the striker , but he also played behind the tips in attacking midfield or as a hanging tip. As famous as he was for his dropouts, his game could also be awesome. Edmundo played in the club for AC Florence and Vasco da Gama, among others . Between 1992 and 2000 he played 39 times for the Brazilian national team and scored 12 goals. During this time strikers Romario , Bebeto and, a little later, Ronaldo dominated the Brazilian attack and Edmundo was mostly a substitute. Edmundo took part in three South American championships (1993, 1995 and 1997) and scored several times in these tournaments. In 1995 he finished second with Brazil and in 1997 Brazil won the tournament and Edmundo scored in the final. He took part in the 1998 World Cup and had a chance to be used as a striker in the final against France, as Ronaldo fell ill under unexplained circumstances before the final. Ronaldo played anyway and Edmundo only used in the 74th minute. Brazil clearly lost 3-0 against hosts France .
“Eight or nine hours before the final, he had a convulsion in the hotel. A terrible scene, we thought he was going to die. (...) It was the doctors who examined him, found nothing and gave him the green light. (...) In the dressing room it suddenly got wild, we thought Ronaldo was risking his life - and we had prepared ourselves with Edmundo. I wouldn't say it's Ronaldo's fault that we lost the final. But from an emotional point of view we would have been more stable at this point if Edmundo had played. We weren't even at 50 percent. "
In 1999 he was sentenced to four and a half years in a semi-open prison for an accident in which three people died. However, he only spent one night in prison by taking advantage of all legal remedies. In June 2011, the Brazilian police arrested him in São Paulo. Edmundo will most likely face a multi-year prison sentence.
