Highest victories

Attendees

The field of participants consisted of the 10 best clubs from the CBF ranking from 2007. The other 54 participants came from the soccer championships of the states of Brazil in 2007 or their cup competitions.

The five participants in the 2008 Copa Libertadores did not participate in the competition. These were the Flamengo Rio de Janeiro (CBF - 3rd), São Paulo FC (CBF - 5th), Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte (CBF - 9th), Santos FC (CBF - 10th) and Fluminense Rio de Janeiro (CBF - 11.).

Seven teams from the CBF ranking qualified from the field of participants from the state championships. These were Grêmio Porto Alegre (CBF - 1st), Atlético Mineiro (CBF - 6), Botafogo FR (CBF - 12th), Goiás EC (CBF - 14th), Sport Recife (CBF - 16th), EC Bahia ( CBF - 16.) and EC Vitória (CBF - 20.).

The free places in the ranking were taken by the following clubs.

Imperatriz lost the final of the Maranhão State Championship and qualified for the cup competition in second place. On December 21, 2007, the Vernabnd Maranhão declared the Bacabal EC runner-up, as the state championship rules stipulated that the places should be determined from the second from the total of the points won. The CBF followed this decision and awarded Bacabal the original starting place of Maranhão on January 15, 2008. The supreme sports court of the CBF reversed this decision on February 14, 2008 and Imperatriz was entitled to the starting place in the competition.

mode

The mode consisted of a knockout system . For the first two rounds, the rule was that if a team wins an away first leg by at least two goals, there is no second leg.

The goal difference counted. In the event of a tie, the away goals rule was applied. If no winner was determined after these were used, this was determined in a penalty shoot-out.

Tournament course

1 round

In the first round match of the game Maranhão AC against AD São Caetano on February 13, 2008, eight players were used irregularly by Maranhão. The club was then disqualified. The second leg did not take place and the São Caetano moved into the second round.
