The Estádio Ilha do Retiro (officially Estádio Adelmar da Costa Carvalho ) is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Recife . It has space for 30,520 spectators and is the home of the Sport Recife club .
history
The Estádio Ilha do Retiro in Recife, the capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco in the northeast of the country, was built in 1937 and opened on July 4th of the same year. The new stadium was named Ilha do Retiro , based on the district of Recife in which it was built. Later the name of the stadium was changed and it was named after Adelmar da Costa Carvalho (1909-1990), a former president of Sport Recife, Estádio Adelmar da Costa Carvalho . However, the old name is still very popular. Sport Recife has been using the Ilha do Retiro as a venue for home football matches since 1937.
The Estádio Ilha do Retiro is the second largest football stadium in Recife after the Estádio do Arruda of Santa Cruz FC , which can seat 60,000 spectators. Today it has a capacity of 30,520 spectators. The record setting in the stadium was achieved when CA do Porto made a guest appearance in Recife on June 7, 1998 as part of the Pernambuco national championship and 56,875 spectators came to see the 2-0 success of Sport Recife. However, it should be noted that the stadium was crowded for this game, which was not uncommon in Brazilian football in the past. In general, the Estádio Ilha do Retiro has already offered space for around 30,000 spectators in the past. With this capacity, the stadium was a venue for the 1950 World Cup , which Brazil was able to secure. At the tournament, one game, the preliminary round match between the national teams of Chile and the United States , which ended 5-2 for the former, took place in the largest stadium in Recife at the time.
