The Copa do Brasil is the first national soccer cup competition in Brazil. The Copa was hosted by the Brazilian Sports Federation, the CBF . The cup winner was qualified as a participant in the Copa Libertadores 1990 .
Season course
The competition started on July 19, 1989 in its season and ended on September 2, 1989. At the end of the season, the Gremio Porto Alegre became the first title holder. The top scorer was Gérson da Silva from Atlético Mineiro with 7 goals .
The first ever goal in the competition was scored by Alcindo Sartori from Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . He scored the goal in the first round first leg against Paysandu SC on July 19, 1989 in the 29th minute.

Tournament schedule
In the round of 16 of the Mixto EC, the second leg against Grêmio Porto Alegre was not included (first leg 5-0 for Grêmio). The club justified it by not being able to get the corresponding flight tickets.
