Cristóvão Borges dos Santos (born June 9, 1959 in Salvador , Bahia ) is a Brazilian football coach . He played actively in the midfield position and played a number of times for the Brazilian national team in his career.

Career

During his active time as a player, Cristóvão Borges competed for well-known football clubs in Brazil. He spent most of the time at Fluminense Rio de Janeiro . In his later playing career at Gremio Porto Alegre , he made it into the Brazilian national team in 1989. He came on as a substitute in a friendly against Paraguay in 1989 and scored his first goal for the Seleção . This was followed by further appearances in friendly matches and a tournament in Denmark against the national teams of Denmark and Sweden . At the Copa América 1989 he was part of the team, but was not used.

Cristóvão Borges began his coaching career in 1998 as assistant coach to Alfredo Sampaio at Bangu AC . This was followed by positions as an assistant coach until he came back to CR Vasco da Gama as an assistant in 2011 . From the local head coach Ricardo Gomes he took over his coaching position for a short time, but had to leave the club again in 2012. This was followed by further engagements with the local rivals of Vasco da Gama Fluminense FC and CR Flamengo , before he was coach of Atletico Paranaense from October 2015 to March 2016 . In June 2016, Borges succeeded Tite , who gave up his post as head coach at Corinthians São Paulo in favor of coaching with the national team. Borges was released from Corinthians on September 17, 2016. The club was sixth in the table at the time.
