National Championship of Rio Grande do Sul
The Campeonato Gaúcho de Futebol is the soccer championship of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil . It was held for the first time in 1919 and has taken place annually since then - with the exception of 1923 and 1924.
Record winners are SC Internacional from Porto Alegre with more than 40 titles, followed by city rivals Grêmio . In addition to three other clubs from the capital, eleven clubs from the province managed to interrupt the supremacy of the two major clubs. Only Guarany FC from Bagé managed to do this twice, and this in the first half of the last century. Most recently EC Juventude won from the province in 1998 and SER Caxias do Sul in 2000 , both from Caxias do Sul .
