Rio Grande is a major Brazilian city with 208,641 inhabitants (2016) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul . The city is located at the mouth of the Lagoa dos Patos between the cities of Santa Vitória do Palmar in the south and Pelotas in the north, which were once part of the city's territory. The municipality extends in the south to the Lagoa Mirim .
history
The city, founded in 1737, initially as a fortified place to protect the Portuguese colony against French corsairs, is the oldest in the state. Back then, the Lagoa dos Patos was still considered a large river - Rio Grande means nothing else - and that's how the city got its name. In 1751 the settlement received the status of a "vila". Between 1835 and 1845 it was the capital of what was then the province of Rio Grande do Sul. Because during the Farrapen Revolution (1835-1845) its president, Antônio Rodrigues Fernandes Braga , was forced to flee from the insurgents from the capital Porto Alegre to Rio Grande. For this reason, the Vila was elevated to a city ( ciudade ) in 1835 .
In 1971 the city became the seat of the newly established Roman Catholic diocese of Rio Grande . The parish church of São Pedro , consecrated in 1756, became the cathedral of the diocese.
Port, economy, infrastructure
The city is not far from the border with Uruguay in the extreme south of the country. With the super postage at the entrance to the Lagoa dos Patos, it owns one of the largest seaports in Brazil. The port consists of a TECON container terminal, which has been operated by the private shipping group WILSON Sons (or WILPORT) since 1997. In 2007, 363,150 containers were handled here (source: WILPORT) .
In addition to the TECON container terminal in Superporto, there is also the old and new ports (Port Velho, Porto novo). While the Porto Velho is being used more and more for tourist purposes and cruise ships, there are other port handling installations for rolling cargo ( RoRo ships ), fertilizers, grain and liquid bulk goods as well as for forest products in the area of Porto Novo, Superporto and São José do Norte Velho and general cargo . There is also a fishing port here.
Since 1937, there are in the city, a petroleum refinery of the company Ipiranga .
Rio Grande Airport is located in the southern part of the city. To the north of this is the campus of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG).
