The Lagoa dos Patos ( Portuguese for duck lake ) is a lagoon in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . With a length of around 290 km and a maximum width of around 64 km, it covers an area of ​​around 10,145 km².

The Lagoa dos Patos is connected to the Atlantic Ocean in the south at Rio Grande . Originally, the structure was believed to be the mouth of a large river called the Rio Grande by the first Spanish sailors who took refuge in the lagoon during storms .

In the northwest the Rio Guaíba forms a side bay, in the northeast the Lagoa do Casamento .

Among other things, the city of Porto Alegre is located on the Lagoa dos Patos. The São Gonçalo Canal connects to the Lagoa Mirim in the south .
