The Lago Guaíba is the 50 km long, 496 km² comprehensive confluence of 5 rivers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the south of Brazil . In the northeast of the estuary is Porto Alegre .

The Lago Guaíba, which looks like a lagoon , merges into the even larger Lagoa dos Patos .

Some of the tributaries have been heavily polluted by industrial wastewater (e.g. leather industry ), pesticides and untreated household wastewater. This led to various high-profile campaigns by environmental groups that brought city dwellers, farmers and even indigenous groups together in the original forests ( Mata Atlântica ) of the source areas of the rivers.
