The Laguna Merín (in Portuguese: Lagoa Mirim ) is an extensive lake in South America with an area of 3750 km², through which the border between Brazil and Uruguay runs. Its name is derived from the word mirĩ from the Tupí-Guaraní , which means "small". Uruguay has some seaside resorts on the shores of the lake that have sandy beaches and shallow water.

The catchment area of the lake extends over both countries. The main tributaries from the territory of Uruguay are the Cebollatí and Tacuarí and, on the border of the two states, the Yaguarón (in Portuguese: Jaguarão ).

The river-like São Gonçalo Canal connects the lake with the even larger Lagoa dos Patos lagoon . Another part of the lake shore is characterized by extensive wetlands under which the Natural Reserve of Taim protrudes on the Brazilian side, which for the UNESCO - heritage of mankind has been proposed.

The economy in the area of the lake is mainly based on animal husbandry. The cultivation of rice is also very important, taking advantage of the favorable conditions for the development of this grain. Tourism is also an important source of income.

On July 7, 1977, the Tratado de la Cuenca de la Laguna Merín (in German: the Treaty on the Basin of the Laguna Merín ) was signed in Brasília . Comisión Mixta Uruguayo-Brasileña para el Desarrollo de la Cuenca de la Laguna Merín (CLM) (in German: The Mixed Uruguayan-Brazilian Commission for the Development of the Laguna Merín Basin ) is a body charged with monitoring compliance with the agreement . The CLM has one seat in Treinta y Tres department and another in Porto Alegre .
