Copa do Brasil 2017

The Copa do Brasil 2018 (officially Copa Continental Pneus do Brasil de 2018) was the 30th edition of this national soccer cup competition in Brazil. The Copa is hosted by the Brazilian Sports Federation, the CBF . The cup winner qualifies as a participant in the Copa Libertadores 2019 . Eleven clubs qualified directly for the round of 16.

Attendees

The field of participants consisted of:

Participant state championships

71 participants came from the soccer championships of the states of Brazil or their cup competitions.

From the State Cup of Mato Grosso , the CE Dom Bosco was originally supposed to participate. Two months after the end of the Copa FMF, the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD) returned nine points to the União EC from the first round. With these nine points, União finished fourth and qualified for the Copa FMF semi-finals 2017 instead of the Mixto EC . The already held semi-final, Dom Bosco against Mixto, was canceled and União played a new semi-final against Dom Bosco. União also won the final on penalties and qualified for the finals, which gave him the right to play in the 2018 Copa do Brasil.

Already in the first round of the competition there was the first surprise when it was eliminated of the Série A Club Botafogo FR from Rio de Janeiro . Also surprising was the elimination of Sport Recife as 15th in the CBF ranking in the second round against Ferroviário AC (CE) , who did not have a place in the ranking.

Events

Best players

Before the final game on October 17th, the fans on Facebook voted for the best player of the tournament. Jádson was elected by Corinthians São Paulo with 125,000 votes and thus 61% . In second place with 39% came Dedé from Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte .

The tournament's best goalkeeper was also voted on on Facebook. You could choose from Corinthians players Cássio Ramos and Fábio from Cruzeiro . Cássio was elected with 126,900 votes and thus 60%.

The most beautiful goal of the tournament was scored by Giorgian De Arrascaeta from Cruzeiro . His goal to make it 2-1 in the final second leg was voted 52% in a vote on Twitter.

mode

The mode consisted of a knockout system . There were no second legs played in the first two rounds. The club, which was lower in the CBF ranking, was given home rights. The winner of a game advanced to the next round. If there is a tie in the first round, the better ranking club automatically qualifies for the next round. In the second round, the decision was taken in the event of a draw on penalties.

From the third round, the pairings were played again with a second leg. On February 21, 2018, a drawing was drawn to determine which club had home rights first in the third round. The away goals rule and the penalty shoot-out were used to determine the winner. In contrast to the previous season, changes were made. The rule that was applied for the first time last year that the away goals rule does not apply to the finals is applied to the entire competition.

Furthermore, the change time window for players within the association has been postponed. If this was on April 24th in 2017 and thus also before the start of the national championship, changes may be extended until July 30th in 2018.

Video evidence was introduced from the quarter-finals .

Prize money

The CBF offered prize money. The cup winner should receive 50 million reals, the runner-up 20 million, the semi-finalists 6.5 million and the quarter-finalists 3 million achieve.

Semifinals

No interruption to the schedule was planned for the friendlies of the national teams in September 2018. The following players have been released for the games. The CBF contradicted Flamengo's request to reschedule the first leg from September 12 to 19 without giving any reason. The Flamengo and Cruzeiro clubs agreed to share the cost of bringing their players back. First of all, Cuéllar, who will meet Argentina on September 11th when Colombia is selected, is to be collected from Tampa with a charter plane. Immediately afterwards the players Dedé and Paquetá from Washington , who play with the selection of Brazil against Ecuador on the same day. The flight should then go to Rio de Janeiro. From here, Dedé will then take another flight straight to São Paulo. The CBF announced that it would release the players so that they can start their early departure. However, as he points out in the context that the association's competition rules under Article 25 provide for a minimum rest period of 66 hours between two competitive games. If the players are used in the semi-finals, the CBF does not assume any responsibility.

This resulted in a pack formation that the referee was able to resolve. After the final whistle, there was another argument between the players in midfield. In this Palmeira's player Mayke was violent against Sassá and Léo. Mayke and Sassá, who hit back, received the red card. Likewise, the Palmeiras player Diogo , who was also violent against Lucas Romero . In October, Mayke and Diogo were suspended for two games and Sassá for six games by the STJS sports court.

Finals

Due to the complaints about the appointment of players who were to compete with their clubs in the semi-finals for friendly matches of the national team, the CBF announced in September 2018 that no players would be appointed to the friendly matches in October 2018, whose teams would take part in the final.

The draw, which club has the first home right, took place on September 27, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at the CBF headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. This revealed that Cruzeiro initially has home rights and the decision will be made on October 17, 2018 in São Paulo at Corinthians.

The two clubs met for the last time in a final at the 1998 championship , which Corinthians won in three games. In that year Cruzreiro lost the finals in the Copa do Brasil 1998 shortly before , here against the local rivals from Corinthians the SE Palmeiras . The clubs have participated in the finals at the Copa do Brasil so far:

The clubs released the following players for the friendly matches in October 2018. The Paraguay team played no games, only a training camp. The Corinthians players were therefore able to take part in the first leg of the final. The retired Cruzeiro player De Arrascaeta missed the first leg.

Return leg

Cruzeiro's Giorgian De Arrascaeta played against Japan on October 16, 2018, but was able to arrive in São Paulo in time for the second leg due to the time difference. The flight lasted over 25 hours and De Arrascaeta almost missed the flight, he was the last to get on the plane.

In the game De Arrascaeta came on in the 67th minute and scored the goal to 2-1 in the 82nd minute. Thus, as in the previous season, he was successful in a final game as a goalscorer.

The penalty for Corinthians in the 55th minute was only imposed with the help of video evidence. The referee had initially not recognized a foul by Thiago Neves on Ralf in the penalty area.

In the 69th minute, Pedrinho scored the alleged opening goal for Corinthians to make it 2-1. The goal was also revoked according to the video evidence. Shortly before the shot on goal, Jádson committed a foul on the Cruzeiro player Dedé .

Dedé was chosen for the Man of the Match .
