Career

General

Fábio is one of the best goalkeepers in Brazil. In his youth he played for Brazil's U-17 national team. Under Dunga , he was also called up repeatedly to the senior national team, but did not appear here.

At his current club he has developed into an idol through his consistently good performance. He is the captain of the team and with 831 games (as of January 2019) he is number five of the most appearances for Cruzeiro.

society

He started his career at the lower class club União Bandeirante . There he was noticed early on with excellent performances, so that he already played his first professional season at the age of 17 and in the same year played for the U-17 national team. With this he also won his first title, e.g. B. at the U-17 World Cup.

This also made the first division clubs aware of him. In 1998 Fábio was signed by Athletico Paranaense . In his first season he was able to win the first title, the national championship of Paranese.

At the end of the season he moved to Cruzeiro for the first time. The success stayed with him here. In 2000 he won the Brazilian Cup.

The success stayed with him when he moved to CR Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro that same year . With he won the Brazilian state championship and the Copa Mercosur in the 2000 season . After that, since was relatively unsuccessful and brought the success-used "only" 2003 title of national champion of Rio.

In 2005 Fábio then went back to Cruzeiro. There he won the national championship of the state championship of Minas Gerais four times .

A scandal broke out in 2007 when Fábio refused to work in the middle of the game against local rivals Atlético Mineiro . Due to the poor defensive behavior of his teammates, he turned his back on an opponent attacking with the ball, who could easily score a goal. The fans then demanded his suspension. Despite showing no signs of injury in the game, he was out injured for three months after the game.

In the meantime, in April 2008, Fiorentina also showed interest in the goalkeeper. A transfer fee of five million euros should be paid. Because of his Italian ancestors, he would also have received Italian citizenship. His club refused to release the current contract. The talks were resumed in spring 2009, again no approval was given.

With Cruzeiro, Fábio was able to win the championship in 2013 and 2014 . He has played 698 games for the club so far (as of July 12, 2016). On August 14, 2016, he injured his right knee in a match against Coritiba FC in the championship round after a collision with Colin Kâzım-Richards . On January 4, 2017, Fábio returned to training. In the state championship of Minas Gerais he played his first competitive game on April 9, 2017 after the injury. On October 21, 2018 Fábio played his 800th game for Cruzeiro. On February 23, 2019, it was announced that Fabio had extended his contract with Cruzeiro until the end of 2020.
