The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 1998 was the 42nd season of the Brazilian Série A .

Season course

The Série A started its new season on July 25, 1998 and ended on December 23, 1998. The championship was organized by the national association CBF . In order to adjust the size of the league again, four teams had to relegate at the end of the season , as the league was to be reduced by two teams in the 1999 season.

During the competition, all 24 Série A clubs met once based on a pre-season schedule. The best eight teams then met again in one game in a knockout round. The knockout round and the final were played according to the "best of three" rule . The final table, including the results from the knockout games, was used to determine the qualification for the international competitions.

After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The “ Golden Ball ”, awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Edílson from the champions SC Corinthians . The top scorer with 21 goals was Viola from FC Santos .
