Gilberto da Silva Melo , known as Gilberto , (born April 25, 1976 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) is a former Brazilian soccer player .
Career
society
Gilberto began his career with America FC in 1993 . After two years he moved to the traditional Brazilian club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro , where he was able to assert himself. In 1998 Gilberto signed for a short interlude with Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte , but then moved to Europe for the first time to Inter Milan the following year . But he didn't make the breakthrough at the time, so that he soon played again in Brazil for Vasco da Gama , Gremio Porto Alegre and AD São Caetano . In 2004 the midfielder dared to move to Europe again and signed in the Bundesliga with the German capital club Hertha BSC . Right off the bat, he became a top performer. In his league debut on August 7, 2004, the first matchday of the 2004/05 season, the Brazilian scored his first goal in Hertha in a 2-2 draw against VfL Bochum . At the end of the season he was the outfield player with the most appearances (33 out of 34 games). Only goalkeeper Christian Fiedler played more often. He scored six goals, making him, along with Nando Rafael, the second best scorer behind Marcelinho . But it wasn't until the 2006/07 season, after Marcelinho left the club, that Gilberto flourished in the role of leading midfielder, when players like Yıldıray Baştürk and Kevin-Prince Boateng were long-term. On January 31, 2008 Gilberto moved to England to Tottenham Hotspur . 25 days later, on February 24th, he celebrated his first success with the "Spurs" when the Carling Cup was won 2-1 after extra time against Chelsea . However, until then Gilberto had no use for the English. Gilberto was only used for the first time on March 6 in the UEFA Cup match against PSV Eindhoven . At halftime he was replaced by Jamie O'Hara again. He made his Premier League debut three days later against West Ham United . In the 4-0 success, he also scored his only league goal for the Spurs. Since he was not happy at Tottenham Hotspur, injuries threw him back again and again, Gilberto dissolved his contract with Tottenham. In 2008/09 he came to only one appearance in the Premier League and mostly spent his time at Tottenham as a spectator. Eventually the midfielder moved to his Brazilian homeland for the club Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . There he was often used again.
National team
In the Confederations Cup 2005 , in which Roberto Carlos , who plays in the same position, did not participate, Gilberto was used in four out of five games. In the final, he won with Brazil 4-1 against Argentina .
Gilberto was part of the Brazilian national team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He was used in the third group game against Japan and scored his first international goal there.
After Roberto Carlos retired from the national team, he has become a seasoned player under the new coach Carlos Dunga . Gilberto won the Copa America with the Brazilian national team in 2007 by beating Argentina 3-0 .
In May 2010, coach Dunga appointed him to the squad for the World Cup in South Africa . In this, the midfielder came on two short appearances. In the second round match against Chile Gilberto came on for Robinho in the 85th minute , in the quarterfinals against the Netherlands coach Dunga brought him on in the 62nd minute for Michel Bastos , who had ousted Gilberto before the start of the World Cup. The game was lost 1: 2 and the Brazilians had to leave disappointed. During the tournament he was the oldest player in the ranks of the Seleção .
