Nando Rafael (born January 10, 1984 in Luanda , Angola ) is a German - Angolan football player .

Before professional sport

He left his home country Angola at the age of eight after both parents were killed in the civil war . Rafael only survived because he was playing football in the neighboring town at the time of the attack. At first he immigrated illegally to the Netherlands . After long disputes with the Dutch authorities, however, he was not given a work permit , which ultimately led him to Germany . He has been a German citizen since July 2005 .

Career

society

Rafael played football in Angola. In the Netherlands, he joined the renowned youth division of Ajax Amsterdam to improve his football game there. In the summer of 2002 he moved to Hertha BSC in Berlin . Although he had many missions there in three years, the final breakthrough should not succeed, which is why he left Berlin in the winter of 2006 to start a fresh start at Borussia Mönchengladbach . In its second season at Borussia, the team was relegated to the second division. With only twelve missions there, Rafael was not part of the regular Borussia staff. At the end of the 2007/08 season he rose with the team back to the Bundesliga . Despite this success, Rafael decided to change clubs again. He found a new employer in Denmark at Aarhus GF . There he scored ten goals in 32 league games.

At the beginning of the second half of the 2009/10 season, former German second division club FC Augsburg signed Rafael. On his birthday he signed a contract until the end of the season. At the end of the 2010/11 season, Rafael was promoted to the Bundesliga with FC Augsburg. On March 31, 2012 (28th matchday), he scored his first Bundesliga goal for Augsburg in a 2-1 home win over 1. FC Köln with the winning goal in the 45th minute from a penalty . During the summer break of 2012, Rafael moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf . Since he only had one contract that was valid for the Bundesliga , his engagement ended with the Düsseldorf team's relegation at the end of the 2012/13 season . He played a total of 11 games for the Düsseldorf team and scored 2 goals.

On July 1, 2013 he was signed by the Chinese first division club Henan Jianye . After he had been without a club since January 1, 2015, VfL Bochum signed him in the summer of 2015 and provided him with a one-year contract that was valid for the 2015/16 second division season . This season, Rafael completed eight second division games for Bochum, in which he scored one goal. After the end of the season he left Bochum again. In January 2017 he completed a trial training with the former Bundesliga club SV Waldhof Mannheim , who plays in the Regionalliga Südwest , but was not signed. At the end of March 2017, FC 08 Homburg announced the commitment of Rafael to the 2017/18 season, which, however, lost its validity with the relegation of the Homburg to the league.

In summer 2019 he joined the SG Germania Birklar in the district league A Gießen .

Rafael made 13 appearances for the German U-21 national team and scored five goals. On January 5, 2012 he was appointed to the Angolan national football team for the first time and made his debut on January 26, 2012 at the Africa Cup against Sudan .
