The Copa Brasil 1985 was the 29th season of the Brazilian Série A . The name-like competition, the Copa do Brasil , is the Brazilian cup competition, which was held at the same time as the championship from 1989 onwards.

Season course

The Série A started its new season on January 26, 1985 and ended on July 31, 1985. The championship was organized by the national association CBF .

After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The " Golden Ball ", awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Marinho from the vice-champion Bangu AC . The top scorer was Edmar Bernardes dos Santos from Guarani FC with 20 goals .

mode

The participating teams were initially divided into four main groups, which played the preliminary round matches next to each other.

1st round :

A total of 20 teams played in groups A and B, these were the twenty best from the association's eternal ranking. There were ten clubs in each group. In the first half of the season all teams played against those from the other group. Games within their own group did not take place.

At the end of the first half of the season, the two group winners qualified for the second round. After the second half of the season, the group winners of the second half of the season and, like the two best placed from the round two, qualified for the second round.

A total of 24 teams played in groups C and D, these were the 22 best from the national championships in 1984 plus the two finalists from Serie B in 1984, Clube do Remo and Uberlândia EC . The mode in these groups was the same as in groups A and B.

2nd round :

In the second round, the sixteen qualifiers played against each other in four groups (E - H) of four teams each. The group winners advanced to the semi-finals.

Final round :

The semi-finals were played in home and return legs. There was only one game in the final. The winner had to be determined on penalties.

Total table: A total table was formed from the results of all games. This is used by the national association to calculate the perpetual best list.
