The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 2002 was the 46th season of the Brazilian Série A .
Season course
The Série A started their new season on August 10, 2002 and ended on December 15, 2002. During the competition, all 26 clubs of the Série A met once based on a pre-season schedule. The best eight teams then met each other again in a knockout round in return games. The winner of the two finals became the national champion. The final table, including the results from the knockout games, was used to determine the qualification for the international competitions.
In the season two teams were promoted, but four again had to relegate, as the league should be reduced in the 2003 season by two teams.
After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The “ Golden Ball ”, awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Kaká from FC São Paulo. The top scorer with 19 goals was Luís Fabiano from FC São Paulo and Rodrigo Fabri from Grêmio Porto Alegre .
