Rafael Felipe Scheidt (born February 1, 1976 in Porto Alegre ) is a former Brazilian soccer player who was most recently under contract with the Chinese club Shaanxi Chanba FC .
Since his grandfather was German, he also has German citizenship .
Club career
The early years
Scheidt began his professional career in 1995 with his hometown club Gremio Porto Alegre in the Brazilian first division. However, due to an oversupply of strong defenders, he only came to short appearances.
In 1996 he got an offer from the newly founded J-League team Kawasaki Frontale , which he accepted. He had an immediate breakthrough in Japan . He scored 5 goals in 26 games and was voted into the Team of the Season. This increase in performance did not go unnoticed at home, whereupon Gremio decided to bring the player back.
Back at Gremio, Scheidt continued to improve and became a national player.
Transfer to Celtic Glasgow
For the 1999/00 season , Scheidt moved to Celtic Glasgow in Scotland for the equivalent of € 7.2 million . He was the first Brazilian in the Scottish professional league. Scheidt was brought in to replace the long-term injured Marc Rieper , but he seriously injured himself before he had even played a single league game. After recovering from his injury, he found himself in a long-lasting low form. He never felt comfortable in Scotland and pushed for a transfer back to Brazil himself. In total, he only made three league appearances for Celtic.
The English daily The Guardian published a list of the 10 biggest bad investments in the history of professional football in 2001, which puts Scheidt's transfer to Celtic in second place.
Further career
Scheidt was awarded to Corinthians São Paulo for three years, where his form slowly stabilized again. When a contract extension could not be agreed in 2003, Atlético Mineiro and Botafogo FR followed , where he was dismissed in 2006. Scheidt played in constant form again during these years, but was never able to build on his old strength.
For the 2007 season Scheidt signed a contract with the Chinese first division club Shaanxi Chanba FC , with which he was under contract until 2008.
National team
Scheidt made his debut on March 31, 1999 in a 2-0 friendly against Japan for the Brazilian national team .
This year he played two more internationals against Argentina and one game to mark the centenary of FC Barcelona , which, however, is not counted as an official encounter.
