Marc Rieper-Jensen (born June 5, 1968 in Rødovre ) is a former Danish football player , coach and official . After he had largely withdrawn from football, he took over a hotel, a café and two restaurants in Aarhus .

The 61-time Danish national player became known above all on the side of defensive player Lars Olsen and later as part of the defensive duo "Rieper - Høgh ". With the national team of his home country he took part in the 1995 King Fahd Cup , the 1996 European Football Championship and the 1998 Football World Cup. His younger brother Mads Rieper was also active as a football player.

Club career

Start of professional career at Aarhus GF

Rieper, who was born in 1968 in the city of Rødovre , joined the club's professional team in 1988, after having already been active in the Aarhus GF youth team. Although he was already 20 years old at that time, he made it relatively quickly to become a regular in the Aarhus defensive line . In 14 goalless appearances in the 1988 season , Rieper and his team did not get beyond a place in the middle of the table. In the following season , the team ranked fifth after 26 games. Rieper himself was in action in 23 matches, including scoring for the first time in a professional league game. Before that, the young player and his team took part in the 1988/89 European Cup Winners' Cup, where, after successes over Glenavon FC and Cardiff City in the quarter-finals, they just beat the eventual European Cup winners , FC Barcelona , with a total score of 0: 1 from the current competition retired.

After an acceptable team performance in 1989, the performance of the entire team increased by another in the following years. While in the league in the game year 1990 , the last game year in this format before the introduction of the new super league , only a place in the middle of the table of the densely staggered final rankings was occupied, the country cup gymnastics wrestling 1989/90 performed much better. There the team around the strong Rieper reached the final and lost there against Lyngby BK in the replay after the first encounter between the two teams ended in a 0-0 draw. While he was used in the league in 22 games and remained goalless, he was also used most of the time in the Danish Cup. In the following Super League season in 1991 , the tall central defender was used in all 18 games and in the 1991/92 season , which began in autumn 1991 , Rieper was successful in 18 games in the autumn period. Overall, he scored three goals in these 36 championship appearances, the highest number of league goals that Rieper has achieved in a year in the course of his career.

Brøndby IF

After a third place in the spring of 1991, he reached with the team in autumn '91 only the fifth place in the table in the final standings. In the spring of '92, the actual second part of the season, Rieper moved within the league to Brøndby IF , where he, after being used in all 36 championship games in 1991, played in twelve of the total of 14 league games. Although he moved to Brøndby during the current season , he has a certain claim to the cup title, which the team won at the end of the Landspokalturneringen 1991/92 after a 3-0 win over Boldklubben in 1903 . At Brøndby, as in the national team, he formed a strong defensive duo with the somewhat older Jes Høgh . But Marc Rieper also quickly found the start of the team at the new club and was already on the field in all 32 championship games in the 1992/93 season and scored two goals. Due to a third place in the final table in spring '93, Rieper qualified with the team for the first round of the 1993/94 UEFA Cup . There he was eliminated with the team after considerable performance in the round of 16 against Borussia Dortmund with a total score of 1: 2.

But the following season 1993/94 went exceptionally well for Brøndby IF. In the spring of 1994 they reached third place in the final ranking and qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1994/95 thanks to the victory at the Landspokalturneringen 1993/94 (victory in the penalty shootout over the Næstved BK ) . This was a major success not only for Rieper, but for the entire club, as in the years before, after the departure of some team supports such as Peter Schmeichel , Bent Christensen Arensøe , John Jensen or Frank Pingel, the danger of the entire break-in of the team was in view had to see. Of the many outstanding players and the supporters of the team, only the experienced Kim Vilfort remained loyal to the troop and led the sometimes quite young team around Marc Rieper. After Rieper was still in all 18 games in the autumn for the 1994/95 season , scoring a goal and making it to first place in the table with the team, the Dane moved to England on loan to the local first division club West in December 1994 Ham United . The English club paid a rumored £ 500,000 for the loan deal, which was dated to the end of the season .

West Ham United

He was the first Dane to ever play for West Ham United. He stayed that way until 2010, when Lars Jacobsen was accepted by the English. Rieper made his competitive debut, who was one of the first engagements of new coach Harry Redknapp , on December 10, 1994, two days after signing his contract, in a 2-2 draw against Leeds United . By the end of the 1994/95 season , Rieper was used in another 20 championship games, in which he also scored one goal. Due to solid performances, the Dane was brought into the team as a permanent addition by Redknapp after the loan period had expired. The club paid a further £ 1,000,000 to £ 1,100,000 to Brøndby IF. In the following season , the tall central defender quickly became one of the main players in the defensive chain of the capital club in the London Borough of Newham . He was used in 36 of the 42 possible league games, scored two goals and reached tenth place with the team in the final table.

This performance collapsed in the 1996/97 season when Rieper injured himself and missed a large part of the season. Nevertheless, by the end of the season in May 1997, he made 28 league appearances, a league goal and an own goal. With the absence of the experienced defender, who at that time particularly shone with his congenial defense partner Slaven Bilić , the entire team weakened, which is why they had to fight for relegation for a long time. At the end of the season it was finally enough in the tightly staggered Premier League table for 14th place, just two points before the first relegated AFC Sunderland . In the 1997/98 season Rieper completed five league games in which he contributed a hit before an immediate change of the Dane was announced. This should finally lead him to Scotland to the local first division club Celtic Glasgow , after he had often fallen into displeasure with coach Redknapp and the latter raised more and more criticism against him. The English football fans particularly noticed Rieper in one game when he lost one of his contact lenses during the game, then looked for them on the field and was unable to continue playing for a short time due to the restricted view. At West Ham United he played a total of 101 competitive games, 90 of them in the league, and scored five goals for his team.

Celtic Glasgow

After he was already in five games for the London club in use, he completed the remainder of the 1997/98 season at his new Scottish club. For this he was brought in by coach Wim Jansen in September 1997 for a rumored transfer fee of £ 1,400,000 and quickly became a public favorite. Rieper came into contact with the traditional Scottish club in a certain way at a young age. For example, the former Celtic goalkeeper Bent Martin was active as a goalkeeper youth coach at Aarhus GF after his career ended and thus came into contact with Marc Rieper. He also acted as a ball boy in a 1983/84 UEFA Cup first round match between Aarhus GF and Celtic Glasgow. For his competitive debut for the Bhoys , one of the nicknames of the Scottish team, the Dane came on September 13, 1997 in the 3-2 away win over FC Motherwell , when he was used for the full game. The rest of the season was just as successful for Rieper and his team. So at the end of the season they won the Scottish Championship with a 2-point lead over city rivals Glasgow Rangers and were also successful in the Scottish League Cup 1997/98 , the Scottish League Cup . They defeated Dundee United in the final, with Rieper contributing the goal to the 1-0 lead of his team and thus paving the way for the later 3-0 success.

Known at Celtic Glasgow as a strong headball player and excellent positional play, Rieper acted as a strong defensive partner for Alan Stubbs on the team . Above all, the influence of the Dane, who emerged as a key player throughout the season, was what made the Bhoys' defensive game seem calm but consistent. The club's defensive department also played a major role in the club record that the team set this season (nine winning league games in a row). Together in the team, Rieper also played with his compatriot Morten Wieghorst , who was also active in the Danish national team at the time. After seven championship appearances in the 1998/99 season , the then 30-year-old Dane sustained a toe injury on his right foot that left him out for months. The Brazilian Rafael Scheidt was brought into the team as a substitute ; but Scheidt was also seriously injured before he could even play a single championship game for the Scots. In the meantime, the long-term injured Marc Rieper was still out of action and was brought into the coaching staff by the new Celtic coach Kenny Dalglish together with Tommy Burns as an assistant coach.

Coaching career and life after

After Dalglish's resignation in 2000, he helped his successor Martin O'Neill for a few months and then ended his active career at the age of 32. Looking back on this time, Rieper himself says that the operations on his toe were not really crowned with success, as he could no longer play with full 100%, which could quickly mean the end at such a high level. Although he was able to walk and run normally again after two operations and took part in some training sessions again, he still had great pain when playing the ball with his foot or contacting other players, which was mainly due to the low blood circulation in his large one Toe. Looking back on his time in Scotland, Rieper names two highlights. On the one hand, this was the entire 1997/98 season and on the other hand, the funeral of Oran Docherty, a young boy and Celtic fan who was one of the total of 29 people killed in the Omagh bombing .

Although he still felt connected to Celtic Glasgow, he returned home to Denmark and worked alongside John Stampe as assistant coach of his training club, Aarhus GF, and left the club with Stampe when he announced his resignation in 2002. After that, Rieper, who trained as a real estate agent during his youth in his home country , was briefly active in the management of the association and on the board of the Aarhus GF and then took over a hotel, a café and two restaurants in Aarhus , some of which he and his wife did led. Due to his connections, the two future national players Michael Doyle and Liam Miller from Celtic Glasgow were brought to Aarhus GF. It should also be noted that Rieper also ran his own football school in Denmark after retiring. Rieper had a daughter during his time in England and Scotland.

National team career

From U-21 team player to a growing size in the senior national team

Rieper gained his first experience in a Danish national team in 1988, when he was brought into the squad of the Danish U-21 national team for the first time. He made his international debut on September 13, 1988 in a 0-0 draw in a friendly against England . Then Rieper was in the years 1988 and 1989 in three preliminary round matches of the U-21 European Championship in 1990 against the three group opponents Greece , Bulgaria and Romania . There they did not qualify for the European Championship finals and remained third in Group 1.

Because of his performances in the league, Rieper made the leap into the squad of the senior national team of Denmark in 1990 , where he made his international debut on September 5, 1990 in a friendly against Sweden . In the 1-0 victory of the Danes, he was in action for the full game. The tall central defender made two more appearances at the Scania 100 , a friendly tournament organized by the Swedish Football Association. He was used in both games in Denmark, but only made it to last place in the end. In addition to two more friendly matches and one appearance at the Artemio Franchi Trophy in 1993, a total of ten qualifying matches for the 1994 World Cup followed by the end of 1993 . The team in Group 3 barely made it to the World Cup finals in the United States and had to admit defeat to the strong Spaniards and Ireland , who secured advancement due to the higher number of goals scored.

Successful qualification for the European Championship 1996

After five more international friendly matches, Rieper also played three qualifying matches for the European Championship in 1996 and was then in action with the Danish national team at the 1995 King Fahd Cup in early 1995 . There, the central defender, who had long since made his way into Denmark's starting line-up, was used in all three of his team's games and ultimately won the competition after beating Argentina 2-0 in the final . In the same year, there were seven more European Championship qualifiers and a friendly against Finland . Denmark was able to assert itself clearly as one of the strongest teams in Group 2 in the European Championship qualifiers and, in second place, managed to qualify for the European Championship finals in England together with Spain in Group 1. After three friendly appearances in 1996, the then national coach of Denmark called him Richard Møller Nielsen in the 22-man squad Denmark , which at the European Championship finals in 1996 should attend in England.

At the European Championship, Rieper was used in all three games in Denmark, but retired with the team after some passable performances in the group stage as third in Group D from the current competition. After the elimination from the European Championship finals, there were two more international friendship appearances as well as an appearance in the qualification for the 1998 World Cup until the end of the year . 1997 was mainly characterized by appearances in World Cup qualifiers, of which Rieper completed five. He succeeded on June 8, 1997 in the 2-0 home win over Bosnia-Herzegovina , his 47th international appearance, his first goal for his home country. At the end of the qualification, the team in Group 1 prevailed against opponents such as Croatia , Greece , Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slovenia and made it to the World Cup finals in France as the group leader .

With Denmark at the 1998 World Cup

Then Rieper came to an eventful year 1998. So he completed four friendlies for Denmark by the beginning of June and was then brought into the Danish squad, which should take part in the World Cup in France. Although he was already largely handicapped by his toe injury at the time, he was used in all five of Denmark's games and acted as one of the key players when he led the team to the quarter-finals , where they were close against the eventual finalists Brazil 2: 3 lost. In this encounter, which was the best of the whole World Cup up to that point, Rieper was close to becoming the hero of the game when he just hit the crossbar just before the final whistle when the score was 3-2 for Brazil. Shortly before, Rieper had another chance to equalize, but he also missed it and indirectly helped the Brazilians, who had been favored from the start, to advance in the competition. During the World Cup, the center-back scored a second time in his national team career when he scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia .

Career out after the World Cup

After winning in the previous season with Celtic the championship and through this for the first qualifying round of the Champions League in 1998/99 was eligible to play, he came in this used, but retired after the second qualifying round against Croatia Zagreb from the current Competition off. After leaving, he participated with the team in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup and played seven championship games before the pain in his foot became so acute that he had to withdraw from the game. Although he still played three international matches after the World Cup until October 1998 (all of them in qualifying for the European Championship 2000 ), the Danish national coach Bo Johansson promised him a place in the Danish squad for the Euro 2000, provided the team made it against Turkey as well enforce in the relegation games. Although the performance was partly satisfactory, they were eliminated there and only Portugal managed to successfully participate in the European Championship finals of all the runners-up in the group.

As a national player, he set a Danish record, among other things, when he was used in all of Denmark's official internationals from his fifth international to his 42nd international, bringing it to a series of 38 consecutive games. His career in the Danish national team after playing 61 games and scoring two goals. Other but apparently incorrect sources assume that Rieper only set this record when he made his 50th international appearance in March 1998, when he was used in 31 consecutive international matches. Furthermore, the tall central defender was used in five unofficial internationals in Denmark in the course of his career, in which he remained goalless. As of November 17, 2010, Rieper is one of the 30 most frequently used Danish national players of all time.
