Career

Successful as a trainer in Sweden and first stay abroad

After a playing career in the lower class Swedish league area at Kalmar FF Johansson began there in 1973 as the successor to Lars Arnesson his coaching career. He then took over as player-coach of the men's team of the fourth division Lindsdals IF , which he led to the third division in 1974. After two fourth places in the table, he returned to Kalmar FF. With the club, which has meanwhile been promoted to the Allsvenskan , he reached third place in the table at the end of the 1977 season and fourth place in the following season. The reigning champions Östers IF then recruited him . There he inherited again Lars Arnesson, who had been appointed coach of the Swedish national team. After two places in the top third of the table, he won his first title with the club. The team around Andreas and Thomas Ravelli , Karl-Gunnar Björklund , Peter Nilsson and Teitur Þórðarson won the Von Rosens Cup for the Swedish championship in the 1980 and 1981 seasons before Malmö FF and IFK Göteborg respectively .

Despite the success, Johansson wanted to look for a new challenge and returned to Kalmar FF again. Had the club held in the previous season in the relegation games in the class, the team missed the league in the 1982 season there against Gefle IF . As a season winner in the second division, he qualified with the club for the promotion round and managed against Djurgårdens IF the direct return to the Swedish House of Lords. Once again he left a club at the moment of success and took up his first job abroad when he took over the Norwegian second division club FK Jerv . After a place in the table in midfield, the club was in the 1985 season in a relegation battle, but finished in the last non-relegation rank.

Johansson returned to Sweden before the 1986 season. Again coach of Östers IF, he led the team around Hans Eklund , Peter Truedsson , Jari Europaeus and Ulrik Jansson in his second year in the championship finals, where they failed in the semi-finals after two defeats at Malmö FF .

Years abroad and as national coach at European and World Cup finals

In the summer of 1988 Johansson moved abroad again. In the middle of the season in Sweden he left Östers IF - at the end of the season the club was relegated to the second division - and joined the Greek club Panionios Athens . With the team around Thomas Mavros , Theologis Papadopoulos , Theodoros Zakkas and Stelios Aposporis , he moved into the final of the national cup . The game ended with a 1: 3 defeat against the team from Panathinaikos Athens , which was looked after by his compatriot Gunder Bengtsson .

In early 1990 Johansson took over a national coaching position for the first time. As the successor to Sigfried Held - or the interim solution Guðni Kjartansson , who replaced the hero who had emigrated to Turkey in the last international match in 1989 - he started his service with the Icelandic national team in March . With goals from Pétur Pétursson and Ólafur Þórðarson , his debut was successful, Luxembourg was defeated with a 2-1 win. In the subsequent qualification for the European Championships in 1992 only succeeded against Albania and Spain , so that participation was missed as penultimate in the table. Therefore, the association replaced him at the end of 1991 by Ásgeir Elíasson .

Johansson was involved again in club football and in the summer of 1992 took over from Viggo Jensen as coach at the Danish club Silkeborg IF . If he missed qualifying for the European Cup with the club in his first season, he surprisingly led him to the championship title in the 1993/94 season . Nevertheless, he left the team around Michael Hansen , Heine Fernandez and Peter Sørensen after the end of the season to join HJK Helsinki .

After a year in Finland, Johansson returned to Denmark and took over the Danish national team in the summer of 1996 . With a goal from Ole Bjur , he made his debut here as well, the Swedish national team was beaten in Gothenburg with a 1-0 away win. After the 1992 European champions missed qualifying for the 1994 World Cup and failed in the group phase of the 1996 European Championships , he led the national team with an offensive style of play as group winners in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup finals . As runners-up behind France , the team advanced to the round of 16, in which Nigeria were clearly defeated with a 4-1 win. In a close match against the eventual finalists Brazil , Michael and Brian Laudrup , Thomas Helveg , Peter Schmeichel and the other teammates had to admit defeat in the quarterfinals with a 2-3 defeat. In the qualifying round for EURO 2000 , the team was no longer as confident as before, but achieved second place in the qualifying group behind Italy . In the play-off games of the group runners-up, however, the team dominated Israel with 5-0 and 3-0 wins. In 1999 it was announced that Morten Olsen would replace Bo Johansson, who announced that he would be leaving his post after the tournament. In the tournament she had no chance and remained without scoring or scoring.

In 2003 Johansson returned to the coaching bench as head coach of IFK Göteborg . After the team had managed to stay in relegation last year only in the relegation games against local rivals Västra Frölunda IF , he led them to seventh place in the table in the 2003 season . In particular with Niclas Alexandersson and Peter Ijeh , he played with the team for the Swedish championship title in the following season. On the final days of the match, however, the team gambled away the title and ended up in third place in the table. The cup final against Djurgårdens IF was also lost. After the end of the season he left the club after his contract expired. In March 2005, he took over the Norwegian club Molde FK in the Tippeligaen three weeks before the start of the season . With the club he played against relegation, which was prevented in the relegation games against Moss FK . After the start of the season he ended his engagement.

In the spring of 2010, Johansson joined the coaching staff of Andreas Thomsson at Åtvidabergs FF until the end of the 2010 season .
