Gunder Bengtsson (born February 2, 1946 in Sysslebäck , Värmlands län ; † August 2, 2019 ) was a Swedish football coach . He is best known for coaching the IFK Gothenburg team that won the 1986/87 UEFA Cup .

Career

Bengtsson played for various lower-class clubs in Sweden, the highlight were his years at IK Brage , for which he competed in the second-rate Division 1 and the third-rate Division 2 . In 1974 he became player- coach at Sysslebäck BK and with the promotion to the sixth division he achieved his first success as a coach. In the late 1970s he coached third division Torsby IF before it as 1981 assistant coach from Sven-Goran Eriksson moved to IFK Gothenburg. Together they triumphed in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup , when the favorite Hamburger SV could be defeated in the two finals. After Eriksson then left the club in the direction of Benfica Lisbon , Bengtsson was his successor and ended the 1982 season as the Swedish champions.

The Norwegian club Vålerenga IF recruited after the success Bengtsson after the end of the season. In the 1st Divisjon he led the club to the championship title in the following two years. Nevertheless, he left the club and followed Eriksson a little later in the Portuguese Primeira Divisão to Nacional Funchal . There he remained unsuccessful and returned to Vålerenga IF after he was fired. But even here he stayed only briefly and in the 1985 season he was signed by the reigning Swedish champions IFK Göteborg. In the following 1985/86 European Cup , the team reached the semi-finals against FC Barcelona after victories, including over Fenerbahçe Istanbul and FC Aberdeen . After a 3-0 win over the Catalans in the first leg, the Swedish club looked like a safe finalist, but the Spanish club equalized with a 3-0 win in the second leg and won the subsequent penalty shoot-out . In the following year, after successes over Sparta Prague , BSG Stahl Brandenburg , KAA Gent , Inter Milan and Swarovski Tirol , the club reached the UEFA Cup finals, which were won by goals from Lennart Nilsson in a 1-0 home win and a 1-1 draw in the second leg at Dundee United for the Swedes were decided. At the end of the 1987 season , Bengtsson was also able to celebrate his second Swedish championship title.

In the summer of 1988, the Greek top club Panathinaikos Athens Bengtsson lured into the Alpha Ethniki . Although it was only enough to reach fifth place in the league, the club reached the final of the Greek Cup under Bengtsson's leadership. After goals from Dimitrios Saravakos and Christos Dimopoulos , after 120 minutes of play, including overtime , it was a 2-2 draw against Olympiacos Piraeus . After goalkeeper Nikos Sarganis in penalties parried two penalties, Bengtsson also triumphed in this competition. Nevertheless, he left the club after only one season in the direction of the honor division . At Feyenoord Rotterdam , he formed the club's coaching duo together with Pim Verbeek . However, the successes failed and after a clear 0: 6 defeat against PSV Eindhoven on March 6, 1991, the two were replaced by Wim Jansen .

Bengtsson returned to Sweden in 1992 and achieved top placements in the Allsvenskan with the then Swedish record champions Örgryte IS . In May 1996 he moved to Greece again and took over PAOK Saloniki , where he only spent six months and was released on December 1st. Bengtsson stayed in Southern Europe and recorded a brief stint in Cyprus in 1997 at the Apollon Limassol coaching bench . He then returned to Sweden and subsequently worked in the management of IFK Göteborg.

2000 Bengtsson took his coaching career again and signed a contract with the Norwegian first division club Molde FK . In 2002 he reached the runner- up with the club behind serial champion Rosenborg BK . After a poor start in the following season, he was fired from the club.
