Västra Frölunda IF
Västra Frölunda IF is a Swedish sports club from Gothenburg . The club is best known for its handball , soccer and ice hockey teams , all of which played in the Swedish first division. The latter, Swedish champion in 1965, broke away from the club in 1984 and set up as Frölunda HC .

Västra Frölunda IF was founded in 1930. If the football team was promoted to Division 3 for a short time at the end of the 1940s , it took a short time for the club to attract national attention. In 1953 the handball team was able to qualify for the Allsvenskan. Six years later, the ice hockey team followed suit and from then on also played first-class.
The Västra Frölunda IF football team was also looking up again and at the end of the 1962 season they were promoted to the second division . However, with three points behind Halmstads BK, the immediate relegation followed as third from bottom of the table. And while the ice hockey team was celebrating its first championship title, the football department managed to return to the second division. However, the disillusionment followed immediately, again the relegation behind Varberg's BoIS was missed.
The immediate resurgence of the footballers was almost followed by the march through to the Allsvenskan . Behind Åtvidabergs FF , who lost seven points , they finished second. In the following years, the club managed to hold a few years in the second division. In 1971 the championship could only be finished on a relegation zone. With a second place in the promotion games behind IFK Kristianstad , the club managed to return immediately.
From the beginning, the team played against relegation, which could no longer be prevented in 1975. Although the immediate relay victory succeeded in the third division again, in the promotion games they failed as third behind the promoted Mjällby AIF and IFK Ulricehamn . Then Västra Frölunda IF always played with the front for promotion, but it was not until 1980 before the relay win again succeeded. Then the team prevailed as group first in the promotion games against Trelleborgs FF , Alvesta GIF and BK Astrio and returned to the second division.
This time Västra Frölunda IF managed to establish itself in the second division. 1986 succeeded the relay victory in Division 2 Södra and thus the promotion to the Allsvenskan. Seventh place was achieved there in the first season, the qualification for the championship finals was missed by only three points. In the second year the club found itself in a relegation battle. The league was managed with one point ahead of Östers IF . In 1989, however, with only three wins this season, they were bottom of the table and relegated to the second division.
With two points behind the season winner, Västra Frölunda IF took only third place behind BK Häcken and Helsingborgs IF and thus missed the direct rise. In 1991 the team qualified as the winner of the spring series for the Kvalsvenskan . There she was only fourth and had to play in the promotion games against Helsingborgs IF. After a 2: 4 away defeat, they were promoted to the Swedish elite series with a 3: 1 win because of the away goal rule .
In the Allsvenskan the club finished only the penultimate place and had to compete in the Kvalsvenskan . Here again only managed seventh place, so that the club had to be relegated. After a 1: 2 defeat and a 4: 2 win against IFK Luleå , relegation was managed. In 1994 the team had to compete again in the relegation , against Umeå FC a 2-0 first leg win was enough, as they separated 0-0 on foreign place. A year later she was relegated from bottom of the table.
In the first year in the second division only a midfield position could be occupied, in 1997 the team came back as a season winner in the first division. As fifth in the table, Västra Frölunda IF was able to surprise as a newcomer. After a seventh place in the following season, the club said goodbye to the elite league for the third time.
Västra Frölunda IF was only ninth in 2001. In the following season the team qualified as third for the relegation games against IFK Norrköping . After a 2-1 home win and a 1-3 away defeat, however, both clubs stayed in their respective leagues. Then things went downhill with the club and at the end of the 2005 season was relegation to the third division. Initially still playing for promotion, the club slipped increasingly in the table. The 2010 season, the club finally ended on a relegation zone and rose together with Torslanda IK and Ytterby IS in the fourth division, followed two years later by relegation to the fifth division.
