Club career

He started his career in 1986 at Brøndby IF . With the Copenhagen suburban club he won the Danish championship in 1987 . In 1988 John Jensen moved to the German Bundesliga for Hamburger SV . He played there for two years before returning to Brøndby IF. In 1992 Jensen moved to the English Premier League for Arsenal , where he only scored one goal in many encounters and could not meet the expectations placed on him in this regard (so the Arsenal fans sang: " We'll be there when Jensen scores . "). With Arsenal he won the FA Cup in 1993 and the European Cup Winners ' Cup in 1994 .

Therefore Jensen returned to Brøndby IF again in 1996. In his "third phase" in Brøndby , he won the Danish Cup .

In 1999 he moved to Herfølge BK . With the club he was surprisingly Danish champion in 1999/2000 . In the following season, however, they surprisingly got down. In 2002 John Jensen ended his career.

National team

John Jensen ran on September 24, 1986 in Copenhagen , in the 0-2 defeat against (West) Germany , for the first time for the national team of Denmark when he came on in the 81st minute for Henrik Andersen . In the course of a qualifying game for the 1988 Olympic Games on June 10, 1987, against Romania , Jensen scored his first goal for the national team, where he marked the 7-0 (final score: 8-0). In the same year he also played a game in qualifying for the European Football Championship in 1988 . John Jensen was also present at this tournament and played in two group games, against Spain and Italy . In the end, however, was the elimination after the group stage. In the subsequent qualification for the 1990 World Cup , John Jensen was also there. The qualification for the soccer world championship was missed. Jensen also played in the subsequent qualification for the European Football Championship in 1992 . This qualification was also missed. In 1992, however, Denmark moved up to replace the politically disqualified Yugoslavia . Surprisingly, John Jensen then won the European Championship. He himself contributed to winning the title with his goal to make it 1-0 in the final against Germany (final score: 2-0). After winning the title, John Jensen was also active in the failed qualification for the football World Cup in 1994 for the national team of Denmark. He also played for Denmark in qualifying for the 1996 European Football Championship . During the qualification, Jensen also played his last international match for Denmark; in the 2-0 win on August 16, 1995, against Armenia , Jensen was replaced by Allan Nielsen at the beginning of the second half . Jensen made 69 international appearances in which he scored four goals.

Trainer

After his active career he became a coach at the small Danish club Herfølge BK , with whom he was also champion of the Danish Super League in 2000 . He then moved back to Brøndby IF, where he worked as an assistant coach to Michael Laudrup . In 2006, the team announced their resignation at the Danish first division club, as the salary expectations of both parties differed too much. In the 2007/08 season Jensen worked again alongside Laudrup as an assistant coach for Getafe FC in the Spanish Primera Division. With Laudrup's departure at the end of the season, Jensen's involvement with the Spanish first division club was over.

On July 1, 2009, he was coach of the Danish first division club Randers FC . Jensen was released there in October 2009.

In the 2012/13 season he returned as head coach at Brøndby IF. From July 1, 2014 he trained Fremad Amager . He stayed there for four years.

In September 2018, during the dispute between the national players and coaches with the Danish association over sponsorship contracts, Jensen took over the post of national coach of the Danish national football team on an interim basis .
