Career as a player
society
He started his career at Vanløse IF in 1976 and moved from there to 1. FC Köln in the winter of 1977 . With the Cologne team he won the double in 1978, consisting of the German championship and the DFB-Pokal . However, he could not assert himself with the Rhinelander and came in one and a half years only nine missions and one goal. He then moved to the Belgian first division club SC Lokeren , where he made his breakthrough. In six years he made 190 games and scored 98 goals. After the European Championship in 1984 he moved to the Italian first division club Hellas Verona . With Hans-Peter Briegel , he won the Italian championship in the first year . In his four years in Italy he made 91 games and scored 32 goals. In 1988 he returned to Denmark and played for Vejle BK for two years before retiring in 1990.
National team
Larsen played his first international match for Denmark on June 22, 1977 against Finland . He was in the starting line-up. Due to the fact that he was only a supplementary player in Cologne, it took until May 1978 for his second international match. After moving to Belgium, he became a regular in the national team. Preben Elkjær qualified for the 1984 European Championship in France under the German national coach Sepp Piontek . Denmark had finished the qualifying group as winners ahead of England and Larsen had been one of the Danish top performers with four goals. In France, the Danish team fought their way to the semi-finals. Larsen had a share in the two Danish victories in the preliminary round with two goals. Against semi-final opponents Spain, the team reached the penalty shootout, in which, however, Larsen became a tragic figure. He missed the last decisive penalty, which meant that Denmark were eliminated. Due to his strong performance in the tournament, Larsen was voted third place for the best European footballer of 1984 behind Platini and Tigana .
At the World Cup in Mexico two years later , Larsen reached the round of 16 with Denmark. Denmark won all games and made it into the round of 16 as the best team in the preliminary round with 9-1 goals. Larsen scored four goals. In the last sixteen it was over: Spain won 5-1. Larsen was voted the third best player at the 1986 World Cup because of his performance in the preliminary round behind Diego Maradona and Toni Schumacher . He was also part of the national team at the European Championship in Germany in 1988. There the Scandinavians were eliminated after the group stage. In the second group game there was also a 0-2 defeat against Germany. That was Larsen's 69th and last international match. He resigned from the national team after the tournament.
