Thomas Lund Helveg (born June 24, 1971 in Odense ) is a former Danish football player and current coach . Most recently, he was under contract as an assistant coach at Odense BK in 2013 .
family
Helveg comes from a soccer family. His father played in Denmark's first division and in the B national team, and his uncle had a similar career. His brother, who was two years older than him, also played in the Danish first division.
Player career
Beginnings in Odense
Defender Thomas Helveg played for Odense BK in the early years of his career. Here he played his way into the starting line-up and became a top performer. In the following years clubs from abroad took notice of him.
Eleven successful years in Italy
In 1993 Helveg moved abroad and signed a contract with Udinese Calcio . He had previously hesitated, also because his wife was employed at a university. For this reason, he had a clause built into the contract that allowed him to return to Denmark after three months. Helveg played in Udine in the starting eleven. In 1995 Oliver Bierhoff came to the club; Helveg was the template for him. He and Bierhoff had a share in Udineses first qualification for the European Cup. In 1998 he followed Bierhoff to AC Milan . A year later Helveg became Italian champions with Milan. In 2000 he moved to city rivals Inter and was awarded a short time later to the AC again. In 2003 he won the UEFA Champions League with AC Milan , although he was no longer a regular player in the final. In the summer of 2003 he spent a year at Inter Milan , then the Serie A to leave.
Two and a half years in England and Germany
In 2004/05 he played for Norwich City , who had previously been promoted to the Premier League . At first he could not assert himself in the first team and there were speculations about a return to Denmark, but he finally came to the team because of injuries and played 20 times. After the team was relegated again, he left the club, also because Morten Olsen did not want to see Helveg as Danish national coach in the Football League Championship (second division). Helveg then moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach . There Helveg was assigned the role of leader. Due to injury, Helveg only made 13 appearances in the Bundesliga.
Career finale at the Heimatverein
At the end of January 2007 Helveg returned to Denmark and signed with his parent club Odense BK, which offered Helveg a perspective for the future. At the end of 2010 he ended his career. On December 4, 2010 he ran against Aalborg BK for the last time in a point game. His last appearance as an active player was on December 16, 2010 in the Europa League game against VfB Stuttgart .
National team
For the Danish national team he made his debut on April 20, 1994 in a friendly against Hungary . He played 108 international matches in which he scored two goals. He took part with the national team in the 1996 , 1998 , 2000 , 2002 and 2004 European Championships as well as in the failed qualifications for the 2006 and 2008 European Championships . He last played on October 17, 2007 in the European Championship qualifier against Latvia . On February 28, 2008 Helveg resigned from the national team.
