Daniel Munthe Agger (born December 12, 1984 in Hvidovre , Denmark ) is a former Danish football player . He played as a central defender for the Danish national team , Brøndby IF and Liverpool FC .

biography

Daniel Agger played in his childhood for the club Rosenhøj Boldklub , which he left in 1996 at the age of twelve to play for the youth team of the Danish first division club Brøndby IF . After the Swedish international Andreas Jakobsson had left Brøndby IF in July 2004, Agger made the leap into the A-Team. He quickly established himself there as a regular player and had a share in the success of the team that became champions of the Danish Super League in the 2004/05 season . Under the influence of team captain Per Nielsen , Agger matured into a player of great authority on the field despite his young age and was named Talent of the Year by Spillerforeningen (the Danish equivalent of the English PFA) in 2004.

After the successful season in the Superliga, Agger was appointed to the Danish national team and, like his teammate Rasmus Würtz , made his debut for the national team in a friendly against Finland on June 2, 2005 (Denmark won the game 1-0). The next national game that Agger played was the friendly against England on August 17, 2005 (Denmark won the game 4-1), in which he mainly caused problems for the English striker Wayne Rooney .

In September 2005, he sustained an injury during a game in the Danish Superliga, which put him out of action for the rest of the year.

Daniel Agger was voted Danish Talent of the Year in all sports on December 6, 2005.

In the transfer window in January 2006, Agger moved to the English Premiere League club Liverpool FC , the current Champions League title holder. On January 12, 2006, Agger signed a four and a half year contract and, valued at 5.8 million pounds, became the most expensive football player a Danish club sold to a foreign club and the most expensive defender Liverpool ever bought. However, various injuries meant that in the spring of 2006 he could only play four games for his new team.

In May 2006 he was selected as a player for the Danish U-21 national team for the U-21 European Championship in 2006 . Agger played a total of ten games and scored three goals for the U-21 national team.

At the start of the 2006/07 season, Agger was fully operational and took over the place in central defense from former Finnish national captain Sami Hyypiä .

Agger scored his first goal for Liverpool on August 26, 2006 in a 2-1 win over West Ham United ; the goal was voted “Goal of the Month” by the BBC's “Match of the Day” . On October 4th, 2006 he was presented with the “PFA's Fan Award” for excellent and constant performance in September.

He scored his first Champions League goal for Liverpool on May 1, 2007 in a 1-0 (4-1 on penalties) win against Chelsea in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals. So he equalized the defeat in the first leg; after the penalty shootout, Liverpool moved into the final , which they lost to AC Milan .

In the 07/08 season, Agger was seriously injured after six match days and fell out with a metatarsal fracture for the rest of the season. The following season he played for Liverpool in the Premier League for the first time in over a year on matchday 8. Although he was fit again, Agger was mostly only a substitute behind the seeded central defenders Martin Škrtel and Jamie Carragher this season . Nevertheless, in May 2009 he extended his contract in Liverpool until 2014.

Agger returned to Brøndby IF on August 30, 2014 for £ 3million and ended his playing career here in 2016.
