William Kvist Jørgensen (born February 24, 1985 in Rønde , Djursland ) is a former Danish football player . The offensively and defensively versatile player occupied all of the outside and midfield positions of his teams during his professional career.

Career

Club career

youth

Kvist started playing football at Thorsager Rønde IF when he was five. At the age of eight he moved to the youth department of FC Copenhagen , where he was a professional for six years. After the youth championship title with KB, which he was allowed to accept as captain, he rose to the professional division of the main club FC Copenhagen in 2005 .

FC Copenhagen

On April 23, 2005 he then made his debut in the SAS league against FC Nordsjælland when he replaced the injured Ole Tobiasen on the right side of defense. From the 2005/06 season he became a valuable player due to his variability. Coach Ståle Solbakken then used him in practically every position where there was an emergency. Among other things, he played a few games as a left winger, defensive midfielder or right defender. The team played very successfully, winning the Royal League and the fifth championship title in the club's history.

The 2006/07 season began with a success. After the Finnish representative Myllykosken Pallo -47 had been eliminated in the second round of the Champions League qualification , the club had to eliminate the major Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam to get into the group stage. After losing the home game with 1: 2, you were already almost eliminated. In the second leg in Amsterdam they took a 1-0 lead through a goal by Michael Silberbauer in minute 59 , before a shot by Kvist, who was called up as a left winger, by Belgian Thomas Vermaelen made the final score 2-0 in minute 77 was deflected into the Ajax goal. Copenhagen rose to the group stage of the Champions League for the first time with an overall result of 3-2. In a group with Manchester United , Benfica Lisbon and Celtic Glasgow they then caused a sensation with a 1-0 home win over ManU and a 3-1 win over Celtic, but still remained behind both teams and Benfica group bottom. The title could be defended at national level.

The 2007/08 season began with a personal setback for Kvist. After the departure of the regular right-back Lars Jacobsen , the club had not been able to sign a replacement. So Solbakken was forced to plan with Kvist in this position. Kvist, who made no secret of the fact that he would not prefer the position of the right full-back, had to play in the unpopular position until winter. When the Czech Zdeněk Pospěch was signed in the winter , he moved back into midfield. However, the season was disappointing without a title win and third place in the table.

This was followed by the departures of Michael Silberbauer and Michael Gravgaard abroad, with only defensive player Gravgaard being adequately replaced by Peter Larsson . This created a hole in the central midfield, which Kvist filled. Finally in his preferred position, Kvist played a formidable season as a kind of “engine” for his team and led FCK to their second “double” in the club's history.

By the return of Libor Sionko returned home to Sparta Prague at the beginning of the season 2009/10 , Kvist took over the position right in the middle because he was able to retrieve his strongest performances according to coach Solbakken. At the end of the season, Copenhagen confidently defended the championship title in the SAS league. In the 2010/11 season, Kvist was with FC Copenhagen for the third time in a row and for the fifth time Danish champions and reached the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League .

During the U-17 home European championship , he led his team as captain on the field. Denmark survived the group stage ahead of Finland and the Netherlands in second place, but were then unluckyly eliminated on penalties against Spain.

On August 22, 2007 he made his debut at the age of 22 during the 0-4 home defeat in a friendly against Ireland for the Danish national football team . Eleven more games followed, including four in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Under coach Morten Olsen, Kvist was considered a fixed starter for the world championship early on due to his versatility. On May 10, 2010, he was nominated in Denmark's squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . At the European Championships in 2012 , Kvist played in all three preliminary round games for Denmark over the full game distance and retired with his team in group B of the tournament as group third .
